América slips down IFFHS Ranking: Where do Mexican clubs stand?
The International Federation of Football History and Statistics published its annual ranking of the best clubs in the world.
The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) is an independent body of FIFA that is in charge of collecting data on the world’s clubs and players which it then compiles into lists based on a variety of themes. Its main objective the chronological documentation of world football results, data and football-related information on FIFA and confederation tournaments, international and national games, teams, leagues, federations, players and referees.
The IFFHS recently published the ranking of the best teams during the past year, precisely in the period from 1 March 2022 to 28 February of this year. There were a few surprises - firstly, Real Madrid have been knocked off the top of the ranking and as for the Mexican clubs, the ‘Big Four’ have been surpassed by Pachuca.
Copa Libertadores champions Flamengo top the world ranking on 313 points, ahead of European champions, Real Madrid in second place on 308 points. They are followed by Palmeiras, Benfica, Liverpool, Manchester City, Porto, Independiente del Valle, Al Ahly SC and Inter Milan. As usual, the European and South American teams appear among the best in the world with the exception of Al Ahly, representing Egyptian football.
Where are Mexico’s clubs?
The first Mexican team in the IFFHS world ranking is Pachuca in 145th (100.5 points). They are followed by Monterrey in 154th place; América appear in 187th place - just ahead of Tigres in 191st. Completing the Mexican presence in the ranking are: Cruz Azul (223rd), Pumas (228th), Toluca (251st) and Chivas (326th).
