América’s warning lights are flashing as pressure mounts over reinforcements

The alarm bells are getting louder around Club América, a team that’s used to living under constant scrutiny. Mexico’s most successful club hasn’t landed a single new signing for the Apertura 2026, leaving both the coaching staff and the locker room scrambling to stay competitive — and fans are growing increasingly frustrated.

On Friday night at Estadio Banorte, América couldn’t hold on to a slim lead and ended up splitting points with Atlante — the “Iron Colts,” currently the lowest‑valued roster in Liga MX at roughly $11 million, according to Transfermarkt. That’s a stark contrast to América, whose squad is valued at nearly $108 million, the second‑highest in the league.

Almada hints at incoming “reinforcements”

During the post‑match press conference, América manager Guillermo Almada addressed the ongoing efforts by the front office to strengthen the squad. But he also surprised many by discussing players who still haven’t been considered for selection — including several who played in the World Cup.

Aside from Alejandro Zendejas, who’s recovering from an arthroscopy, Brian Rodríguez, Sebastián Cáceres, and Israel Reyes haven’t even made the bench in América’s first two matches. The club’s explanation: they’re being treated as if they’re still in preseason, with fitness coaches pushing to get them fully up to speed for Almada’s high‑intensity playing style.

Almada expects that to change soon. “We’ll likely have the national team players available for the next game. They finish the work they’re doing tomorrow. As long as nothing unexpected happens, we should have them ready, and they’ll be an important boost for us,” the coach said, noting that he anticipates using all three when América hosts Santos this Sunday.

Almada repeats his message: reinforcements are coming

The coach doubled down on the same theme later in the press conference, again emphasizing that the club is working to give him more tools — and that the returning World Cup players will strengthen the roster once they’re fully reintegrated.

For América, a team built on expectations and pressure, those reinforcements can’t arrive soon enough.
