Argentina are undefeated in their last 10 matches against Mexico and Lionel Scaloni’s side are already under pressure to win on Saturday after their shock defeat to Saudi Arabia in their 2022 World Cup opener.

Argentina vs Mexico: odds

Argentina are favourites to win at 4/7 (1.57) with Bet365, while Mexico are 11/2 (6.50) to take the three points against La Albiceleste.

Argentina came into the tournament among the favourites, on the back of a 36-game unbeaten run. They now have it all to do to keep alive their hopes of a first World Cup triumph since 1986.

Mexico drew their group opener against Poland, with Guillermo Ochoa being their hero on the night after the 37-year-old goalkeeper saved a Robert Lewandowski penalty. With Saudi Arabia winning and Argentina losing, Group C is wide open heading into the second matchday.

El Tri’s last victory over Argentina came in a 1-0 Copa America victory on 10 July 2004.

Messi hoping to turn things around

Saudi Arabia shocked Scaloni’s side and the entire football world with a 2-1 victory. The South Americans took the lead through a Lionel Messi penalty, but were unable to avoid defeat in a group they are still expected to advance from.

Messi, who is probably playing in his last ever World Cup, has been tipped by many to be the tournament’s top scorer and you can’t bet against him adding to his tally against El Tri.

Argentina vs Mexico: prediction

Mexico will be confident of causing another upset after Argentina’s loss to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday but I think Argentina will have too much firepower for Gerardo Martino’s men.

Prediction: Argentina 2-1 Mexico

Poland beat Saudi Arabia 2-0 in Saturday’s other Group C fixture.
