Arsenal vs Manchester United: preview

Arsenal

Arsenal’s only Premier League loss this season came in September’s reverse fixture at Old Trafford, where Marcus Rashford’s second-half double gave Manchester United a 3-1 victory. That defeat aside, the Gunners’ only dropped points this term have been draws with Southampton and Newcastle, allowing them to establish a commanding lead at the top of the table.

Indeed, Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday’s derby saw them go eight points clear. Four days later, Manchester City’s 4-2 victory over Spurs reduced the gap to five, but Mikel Arteta’s men have a game in hand on the second-placed defending champions.

New signing Leandro Trossard, whose move from Brighton was confirmed on Friday, could be available to make his debut against United.

Manchester United

United, who sit third in the Premier League, had won five in a row in the top flight until Wednesday’s away clash with Crystal Palace. At Selhurst Park, Bruno Fernandes’ first-half opener looked set to earn the Red Devils a sixth triumph on the spin, but Erik ten Hag’s men were denied by a fine late leveller, Michael Olise thumping a free-kick in off the bar in stoppage time.

United were also dealt a blow at Palace when key midfielder Casemiro picked up his fifth booking of the league season, meaning he is suspended for the trip to the Emirates.

The 20-time English champions trail Arsenal by eight points, having - like City - played one more game than the North Londoners.

Arsenal vs Manchester United: prediction

United haven’t won at Arsenal in the Premier League since 2017, and we don’t expect that run to end on Sunday. Disappointment at Palace notwithstanding, the Red Devils look to be a team on the up - but the Gunners will be (just) too good for them.

Prediction: Arsenal 2-1 Manchester United
