Atlanta United are aiming to shake up the MLS transfer market once again. According to American journalist Tom Bogert and later confirmed by Sky Sports, the “Five Stripes” are pursuing Middlesbrough striker Emmanuel Latte Lath and are prepared to make an extraordinary financial commitment to secure his transfer.

Sources close to Bogert report that the club, set to be managed by Ronny Deila, have tabled an offer between $18 million and $20 million. If accepted, this would mark the most expensive signing in MLS history.

Who is the most expensive transfer in MLS history?

Should Middlesbrough accept Atlanta United’s offer, it would not only surpass FC Cincinnati’s $16.2 million purchase of Kevin Denkey but would also place Atlanta United as the holder of five of the six most expensive transfers in league history.

The club have already spent a combined $58 million on Thiago Almada ($16 million), Ezequiel Barco ($15 million), Gonzalo Martínez ($14 million), and Alexey Miranchuk ($13 million).

Who is Emmanuel Latte Lath?

The 26-year-old Ivorian striker is Atlanta United’s top choice to complete its trio of designated players. Latte Lath has scored 10 goals in 26 Championship appearances and boasts 28 goals in 64 matches for Middlesbrough.

Latte Lath began his professional journey with Atalanta BC’s Primavera team, earning promotion to the senior squad after a stellar year. He made his debut on August 13, 2016, in the Coppa Italia against Cremonese.

However, he struggled to establish himself at Atalanta and spent several seasons on loan with clubs in Italy and Switzerland. His breakthrough came after joining Middlesbrough, where he has become a key player under Michael Carrick’s management.
