Balboa: ‘The Club Léon players deserve to be at the Club World Cup’
The former USA international had a spell with the Esmeraldas back in the 1990’s but admitted that ‘rules need to be adhered to’.

Marcelo Balboa played for the USMNT over 125 times and in his time as a player played with Club Léon for two years making over 50 appearances for the Liga MX side.
The current television commentator was asked for his view following the news that after an appeal, a CAS verdict ruled the Mexican side out of the Club World Cup due a multi ownership rule violation with both Pachuca CF and Leon controlled by the same group.

The 57-year-old Balboa claimed: ‘The players deserve to be at the Club World Cup but there are rules and sometimes they can be complex‘.
He added: ‘The players are the ones who played, they suffered and won the CONCACAF Champions in 2023. I feel for the players but this is part of football. Let’s see who replaces them as LAFC face America but it’s sad for a club like Léon’.
‘Things move on and I hope they can perform well at the forthcoming Leagues Cup’, he concluded.
