Intensely Pedstrian Play

While it would be fair to call the game boring - there were definitely some taste moments - it was quite apparent from the outset that neither team was fully invested.

The Citizens entered the game with a healthy 3-0 cushion, while the Bavarians came in having taken that loss, but also on the back of some internal turmoil, with Sadio Mane punching his teammate, Leroy Sane. All eyes were of course on both men when the former was brought in to replace the latter during second half play. A cold exchange between them was all we got.

Where general play was concerned, City were solid. Between Gundogan and Grealish pulling strings, the vertical game was noticeable. Yet, there was the ever-present Kevin DeBruyne who's probably the best thing since sliced bread.

As for Bayern, the truth is Kingsley Coman was the best player on the field between the sides. A constant threat to City's defense as he jinked, feinted and generally disrespected his markers all night. Sadly, neither his several attempted assists nor his numerous shots were able to provide any joy for the side of their fans.

City now advance to the semifinals of this year's tournament, where they will face the mighty Real Madrid. Suffice to say that is a mouth-watering tie. So, be sure to check back with us closer to the time as we'll definitely be bringing it to you!

The referee is looking at his watch as Ederson prepares for a goal kick and that's a wrap folks. It's Manchester City 1 and Bayern Munich 1 here in this second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal. City advance 4-1 on aggregate.

With just two minutes left now, City appear to be content to concede the half to Bayern. The German side seems out of ideas. With that, we're now looking at Manchester City in the semifinals of the 2023 UEFA Champions League.

Bayern break slowly, but at this point there isn't much to play for. None the less they continue to probe City's defense. Can we see more before the final whistle is blown.

City players are understandably upset, but the replays clearly show it was the correct call from the referee. It's Kimmich to take.

Sadio Mane is arguing with the referee about a possible penalty after his cross was blocked and we do indeed have a penalty awarded by the referee!

As we approach the final 10 minutes of the match, it's hard to say whether it was thrilling. While there were pockets of play that were worthy of praise, the overall feeling seems to have been one of formality i.e., Bayern knew they couldn't and City knew they would.

Meanwhile Pavard has made way for Stanisic

Bayern have a corner, but it's too deep. Fortunately for his team the Citizens can't cope and they will have another corner.

We thought we had a goal, but unfortunately for Bayern that's not the case. After great play from Coman to square the ball to Tel, the youngster was able to guide it into the net, but from an offside position.

We're also starting to see a little less conviction from both sides as they settle into the reality of what's coming. The Citizens know it would take utter disaster to see them go out. The Bavarians know it would likely take more than they have to offer to eliminate them.

Bayern are enjoying a decent spell of play, but Pavard's final ball into the box goes begging and Ederson will restart.

Choupo-Moting leaves for Stel, while Musiala makes way for Muller. We're now inside the final 20 minutes of the match.

Bayern are preparing another change with the veteran Muller set to come on.

As we approach the 70th minute, one has to believe that it will be City and not Bayern who head to the semifinals of the competition. Yet, as the saying goes, 'not until the fat lady sings.'

Laporte has now entered for Ake after the latter failed to recover from his strain.

To their credit Bayern have not stopped trying, but it appears this is beyond them at this point. Though Chouppo Mote's effort could have counted for more had he put more power on it.

We've got an injuriy now with Nathan Ake going down on his own. It appears to be calf related.

Sadio Mane is entering for Leroy Sane of all people and yes there was a high-five between the pair as they changed places. Alphonso Davies has also entered the pitch in place of Cancelo.

If you're not sure, it will take Bayern Munich 4 goals at this point to force extra time.

Haland with a heavy challenge on Goreztka but there is no whistle in the middle of the park. This time with Nathan Ake on Pavard, however, there will be and a yellow card to boot.

Bayern are in the ascendancy now and are definitely enjoying the better of the play. Still, they've got to be more threatening where City's goal is concerned.

Bayern have got substitutes warming up at the moment and Sadio Mane is not among them. We'll be keeping an eye on this situation for you.

Poorly cleared, the Bavarians now have a throw-in which they choose to go home with. They start from the back.

At this point the sides are trading possession in midfield, but it's Bayern who appear to have settled and after Musiala's cross was blocked they now have a corner from the right side.

Haaland is whistled for a foul after shoving his marker to the ground on the resulting corner. We go again.

Some decent possession from City, but they are ultimately unable to conjure anything of worth in attack. That being said, Bernardo Silva has won a corner on the right side of the field. Kevin DeBruyne to take.

We're off and running once again and it's Manchester City who start with the ball this time. For the moment there have been no changes to either side. So, we start as we finished.

The players are back on the field and we're getting ready for the second half of this quarterfinal second leg between Manchester City and Bayern Munich. As you might know, City have a 3-0 lead from the first leg, but it's not finished yet!

If there is one player on the field who intends to leave everything on the field, it's the young Frenchman. Frankly, he's been at the center of everything productive for the Bavarians and essentially the one player City can't cope with.

The ref has blown his whistle and that's half time here in Munich between Bayern Munich and Manchester City in this UEFA Champions League quarterfinal 2nd leg.

Tempers flare once again with Gundogan being booked in the middle of the park for a dispute with Upamencano.

What should have ended in a goal, ultimately ended in a goal line save. A brilliant run from Koman who found Musiala in the box, but the latter was unable to turn his pass back to a teammate.

We're in the final minute of the half - stoppage time withstanding - and the score is still 0-0, meaning no matter what happens, we're in for a treat in the second.

Approaching the end of the half, Bayern will feel hard done to not have got on the scoresheet, but the same can be said for Manchester City who saw their star miss a penalty.

A lovely piece of play between Sane and Koman which ended in a fierce shot from the former. Unfortunately for the Bavarian side, the effort was directly at Eder in goal. City live once again.

We're now in the final 5 minutes of the half and the score is 0-0. Aside from the missed penalty, there hasn't been much to write home about, but it's got to be said neither side has lacked intensity in their respective approaches.

City is working the ball around the left corner of Bayern's area, but there is no way in. Grealish is finally dispossessed but his teammates win the ball back immediately. Bayern will have to do better if they are to maintain the score the way it is.

The Allianz Arena is in full song now with the score still at 0-0. Can the German side profit from this moment. They're certainly trying!

He's Missed!!! Erling Haaland puts the ball over the crossbar and the score remains 0-0! What a sight to see for a player who seems to score at will. Away we go once again!

And just like that! Out of nowhere we've got a penalty. Following an effort from Bernardo Silva, Umpamencao was judged to have handled the ball. It's Haaland to take and here we go!

Almost a chance at a counter-attack in an opportune place if not for a clumsy collision between Sane and Musiala. City can breathe once again.

The play is becoming a little untidy in the middle of the park with both teams giving up possession needlessly. In the end it's Jack Grealish who escapes but his forward pass is to long and finds only Sommer in Bayern's goal.

Bayern will have a corner from the right side following yet another Kimmich cross. Unfortunately it goes to waste. City with the goalkick, however, it appears that Eder needs a moment to attend to his boot. Off we go again!

A decent move against the run of play with Kimmich crossing to Musiala from the right side. The young German international controlled delightfully, but was bundled off of the ball before he could shout. Despite shouts for a foul, the referee had none of it.

City continue to press high, but one has to wonder if they'll be able to keep this up all game.

Nathan Ake with a decent cross from the left side of goal, but unfortunately none of his temmates - including the waiting Haaland - were aware of it.

The initial intensity of the opening exchanges has begun to fade. For the moment both teams are attempting to maintain shape, while giving each other no space. It would appear that Bayern are doing the better job.

In the end, one could say the ball fell to the wrong player with Goreztka being the one taking the shot. You can ask the fans in the upper level seats.

Bayern have won the ball back in midfield, but have retreated to their keeper in an effort to build from the back. Here we go with Koman in!

What could have been catastrophe has now been repaired. Haaland was played in but seemingly offside only to be fouled by the last man back, Upamemcano. The Frenchman was given a red card but it was promptly retracted after the referee was made aware of the situation. Another sigh of relief.

You've got to score that! Following a great through pass from Musiala, Sane was put in 1-on-1 against Eder, but in the end could only manage to put the ball wide. Guardiola breathed a sigh of relief.

An route one play there from Bayern with Upamemcano going down the right side to Koman. Unfortunately, the former Juve man's cross goes wanting with nobody on the followup.

Once again Bayern have the ball in their own defense as they've been forced to do with City's extremely high press.

We're beginning to see a lot of needless fouls now, but Bayern appear to be trying to maintain focus. For the moment the Bavarians are playing around their own defense as they look for outlets.An attempted through ball has gone wanting with Diaz the man in attendance alongside Koeman who went to ground. No foul says the ref. The Germans are incensed.

So said so done. Joao Cancelo is booked for a cynical foul on DeBruyne.

Tempers are beginning to flare between the sides. This time it's Haaland and Goretzka who are involved in a spat. That being said, the referee has kept his cards in his pocket.

The first real chance, though it didn't end with a shot. Bayern worked their way down the right side through Koman, but his cross was unable to connect with a teammate. City live to tell about it.

Again Bayern with the high press, but City has managed to advance to the midfield where they lose it once again. Fortunately Bayern returns the favor by giving it up in the same spot. The teams appear to be cancelling out each other at the moment.

City have been hemmed in by Bayern's press and the Bavarians manage to knick the ball off of Diaz who promptly fouls Koman for his troubles. There's no card, but he'll need to watch himself.

For the moment Bayern are in control of the game, but have yet to threaten City's goal. Meanwhile, the Blues seem content to observe without committing too heavily to space.

Some encouraging signs here for Bayern in these early moments. They are finding some degree of life down the left side, but it's brought to a halt by Akanji, who clears the ball long. Bayern ball again.

From the get go there is frantic pace to the match even though we're just seconds in. The Germans will know that they've got no time to waste in this one!

There's a bigger question

As much as the fact that Man City brings a 3-0 lead into the second leg against six-time Champions League winners, Bayern Munich, is impressive. One has to wonder whether City has what it takes to win the whole tournament.

Over the last decade, the Citizens have spent roughly 1.3 billion pounds on players and the best they've had to show for it is a single Champions League final appearance in the 2021-22 season against fellow Premier League side, Chelsea. It didn't go according to plan.

This is all to say, that sooner or later the Blues are going to have to start delivering lest they become yet another cautionary tale about the pitfalls of trying to buy success in sport.

It's going to be a great quarterfinal night here in the UEFA Champions League. Last night saw Real Madrid putting paid to Chelsea's hopes, while AC Milan got past their compatriots, Napoli, with a draw.

Tonight we'll see Benfica against Inter Milan and of course here in the big one, we've got Bayen Munich trying to overcome a 3-0 first leg deficit against Manchester City.

With reports suggesting that Mane's time in Munich is up, one has to wonder what the future holds for the Senegalese international. On the other hand, if there's one thing about Mane that isn't up for questioning, it's his talent.

A complete player who has both work rate and technique, the former Liverpool forward will surely have no shortage of suitors, but for the moment, we're getting ahead of ourselves. It's a European night and though tough, the task in front of Mane and his team is doable. Stay with us!

Given that the home team's color is red, it wouldn't have been a crisis if they too had gone with their blue jerseys. Yet, the Citizens have opted for a complete change. Fans will be hoping it does extend to their play as well.

City on the other hand is a club that is a relative newcomer to the upper echelons of the football world. That's not to say they're not good for it, as is evidenced by their 3-0 aggregate lead, but as is the way with the game, things take time to build.
