Bernardo Silva wants Barcelona move, but one major hurdle remains
The former Manchester City captain has agreed terms with Barcelona, but a crucial decision still needs to be made.
Barcelona have reached a full agreement with Bernardo Silva over a potential move to the club, but one key hurdle remains before the deal can be finalized.
The Portuguese midfielder is fully on board with Hansi Flick’s project for next season as Barcelona prepare for what they expect will be a much more normal summer transfer window. After years of financial restrictions that limited their ability to sign and register players, club officials believe those obstacles are finally easing.
While Silva’s arrival appears to be moving in the right direction, the transfer is not yet complete.
Barcelona and the player have already reached a total agreement. The club’s sporting department and president Joan Laporta are both eager to bring him to Camp Nou, and Silva has made Barcelona his clear first choice despite receiving interest from several other destinations.
Among the clubs linked with the 31-year-old are Atlético Madrid and Benfica, the Portuguese club many believe could eventually become his final stop before retirement. He has also attracted interest from teams in Turkey, France, Italy and Saudi Arabia.
Despite those options, Barcelona remains his preferred destination.
Flick yet to give final approval
The remaining question is whether Flick will give the move his blessing.
So far, the German coach does not appear to share the same level of enthusiasm as Barcelona’s hierarchy. While he rates Silva highly, Flick reportedly believes the squad is already stocked with technically gifted midfielders and is unsure whether the veteran would fill a pressing need.
That view differs from the stance of sporting director Deco, who sees Silva as one of the most attractive opportunities on the market.
A low-risk opportunity for Barcelona
Because Silva is available as a free agent, Barcelona would not have to pay a transfer fee. The player is also willing to accept a significant pay cut compared to the salary he earned as Manchester City’s captain.
Deco, who knows Silva well from their shared Portuguese roots, believes the midfielder remains firmly in his prime despite approaching his 32nd birthday in August.
His performances during his final season at Manchester City support that assessment, with Silva continuing to play a major role for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Barcelona’s sporting director is also convinced Silva would fit seamlessly into the locker room. His leadership qualities are viewed as especially valuable for a squad built around a young core that has lost experienced voices in recent years.
How Silva could fit into Barcelona’s plans
From a tactical perspective, Silva could provide valuable cover for Pedri in midfield while also operating in wider positions when needed.
He could even be deployed in a deeper midfield role, something he did regularly under Guardiola this season.
That versatility is one of the reasons Barcelona have remained interested in him for so long.
Both the club and the player would like to resolve the situation before the World Cup begins, making the coming days particularly important.
All eyes will now be on super-agent Jorge Mendes, who represents Silva and several Barcelona players, as he works to find a solution in a move the Catalan club has been trying to complete for years.
If the decision were left solely to Bernardo Silva, there would be no debate.
He is ready to join Barcelona.
