Captain America to the rescue as Pulisic scores last gasp Chelsea winner

A slightly weakened West Ham side had been matching their London rivals for most of the game but the Blues needed a late super sub moment from the US star.

Out of the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid, some distance off the top two, Liverpool and Manchester City, battling for the Premier League title, and nervously looking over their shoulder at the chasing pack for top four qualification, a win at home to West Ham was rather important. The Blues did get all three points, but they needed their American hero.

Pulisic saves Chelsea at the death

It had been a poor showing in the first half and, despite improving in the second, a goal just didn’t appear to be coming. Then, a penalty late on handed Thomas Tuchel’s men the perfect gift to get what they so desperately desired. But Jorginho then fluffed his lines with a strong contender for worst spot kick of the season.

Hollywood, as we all know, is an American institution, and one that is exported to all corners of our little globe. And so it was that Stamford Bridge had their classic finale, as Christian Pulisic latched onto an utterly delicious pass from Marcos Alonso while the referee was checking his watch to bring the game to an end.

Three points that gives some comfort in what has been a very challenging season on and off the pitch.
