Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City: as it happened

Thanks for joining!

That's all from me tonight! Thanks for your company and see you back here again very soon!

City vs Chelsea

The two sides meet again on Sunday in Manchester for an FA Cup tie, where Chelsea will be hoping to prevent City from winning their fifth game in a row against the London club.

City win on the road

It's a big three points for City to take back up the road.

Super Stones

John Stones was rock solid for City at Stamford Bridge.

Aubameyang only had 14 touches when he came on. And then he was taken off! Not a good night for him.

Chelsea are struggling after huge investment. Potter has had to deal with injuries but they should not be 10th in the table.

Will Boehly give Potter time? It remains to be seen.

City have beaten Chelsea four times in a row.

Chelsea stay 10th in the table and now have the same amount of defeats as they had in all of last season.

And there it is!

The whistle goes at Stamford Bridge. City win!

Koulibaly picks up a late yellow for obstruction.

Chelsea have a throw-in but can't get it into the box. City force them out.

Can City hold on? They have 120 seconds to do so...

He had options inside but he saw his name in lights and smacked it over on what is only his fourth appearance for Chelsea. He has to hit the target.

He blasts over the bar!

Chelsea really need a goal!

There will be four minutes of added time.

Kovacic picks up a yellow for taking down Grealish, who had gone on the break. It's the first yellow card of the game.

Hall crosses from the left wing. Grealish clears it away.

The rain comes down as Chelsea look for an equaliser.

City will be five points behind Arsenal if they can hold on here but there is still time for Chelsea. 0-1

City make final change

Chelsea play it nicely from right to left. Kovacic, however, overhits a pass to the unmarked Hall on the left wing.

Gallagher catches Stones and is told to calm down. He hasn't stopped since coming on for Chelsea.

Chelsea have a free inside their own half as they look to equalise at home to the Premier League champions. The home side have certainly looked better since that triple substitution. Mahrez's goal is the difference between the sides, as it stands.

Havertz heads it straight into Ederson's hands. It's a weak effort.

City are at it again.

De Bruyne makes a run beyond Mahrez, and fires a low cross across the box.

Haaland slides to make contact with it but fails to connect.

If Manchester City can hold on, they will move to within five points of Arsenal.

We're now into the final 20 minutes of play and City are in control.

Aubameyang came on to replace Sterling and now he is taken off. That will be a tough one to swallow.

Triple Chelsea change

OFF Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
ON Omari Hutchinson

OFF Marc Cucurella
ON Lewis Hall

OFF Hakim Ziyech
ON Conor Gallagher

Chelsea are making a triple change.

Mahrez scores

City subs Grealish and Mahrez combine to open the scoring in London.

City take the lead

Pep's double change pays off immediately. Grealish plays a low, teasing ball, from left to right and Mahrez is at the back post to tap it in.

City have broken the deadlock!

This game has totally swung. Chelsea are really just hanging on now. City are fired up. 0-0

City changes

Pep brings on Grealish and Mahrez to conjure up some magic in the final third.

It's City with all the momentum now.

It falls to De Bruyne. Silva does so well before picking out De Bruyne.

The Belgian shoots wide, from an angle, about 14 yards out.

Grealish and Mahrez are about to come on for City.

Thiago Silva shoots!

The deflection takes it wide. Silva pleads for a corner but the officials don't see it.

Ziyech curls the corner in from the right. It's a super corner but Haaland rises highest to head it out.

City have had 86% possession in the second half.

Kepa gets down to his left to parry De Bruyne's effort away. It's a big save. City continue to threaten and have upped the ante.

That's the closest City have come to scoring. It's a brilliant cross from De Bruyne.

Ake hits the bar with a header!

City have looked better in the opening stages of the second half. They were not themselves in the opening 45 minutes.

Bernardo Silva crosses it left-footed from the right. Kepa comes out to claim it. It's 0-0 if you're only joining us.

Haaland picks up the ball outside the area and drags his shot wide.

Double City change

Guardiola has made two changes at the break.

Manchester City get us underway for the second half!

Chelsea have lost each of the past three meetings with City since the London club's Champions League final success against them in Porto in 2021.

In the Premier League, Chelsea's most recent victory came a month before that their Champions League success, when Ziyech and Marcos Alonso scored in a 2-1 victory at the Etihad.

The last time Chelsea recorded three points at Stamford Bridge was in the Covid-affected 2019-20 season.

Solid Chelsea

Chelsea have been sharper and have played the better football in the first half at Stamford Bridge.

Guardiola has sent his subs out to warm up at half-time so we can expect some City changes soon.

HT: Chelsea 0-0 Manchester City

And there's the whistle!

Chelsea have been the better side and have had the better chances. City haven't looked themselves.

There will be two minutes added on.

Cancelo goes past Cucurella and his cross is blocked by Koulibaly.

City break down the other end, and De Bruyne has hit shot saved.

Chukwuemeka cracks the post!

Chelsea go so close to taking the lead with a shot from 20 yards out.

Ziyech comes in onto his left foot and his cross-cum-shot is straight into Ederson's hands.

Chelsea 0-0 Man City

Five minutes to go until half-time!

Haaland has 21 Premier League goals so far this season. Incredible.

He shoots over with the outside of his left foot after being played in by Gundogan. It's an excellent first touch by Haaland but you would expect him to hit the target. 0-0

He shots wide!

Mikel Arteta will be sitting at home quite pleased with how this is progressing.

It falls to the German midfielder 20 yards from goal. He opens his body up and curls it wide. Chelsea have been very organised in defence.

Guardiola started with a 3-4-3 formation against Everton and was slightly critical of his players’ performance, suggesting he would look at ‘body language’ in training before selecting a starting 11 for this game.

Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva have replaced Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez, but have not invented much yet.

City's forward players have been quiet so far. Guardiola looks like he is thinking about what he needs to change, or is patience what he really needs?

Chelsea win a free on the right, near the corner flag. Ziyech fires it in but it's headed away again. It's Haaland with the header. He's quite useful in both boxes.

Azpilicueta bombs forward and wins Chelsea a corner on the right.

Chelsea clear the corner.

Graham Potter must be wondering what he did in a previous life with two players off injured inside 20 minutes.

It looked like Koulibaly was pointing at his leg but it turns out he wanted to change his boots!

So he's doing just that right now. Panic over!

Chelsea change

OFF Christian Pulisic

ON Carney Chukwuemeka

Chelsea are forced into a second change.

This is incredible. Now Koulibaly is down. They are dropping like flies.

Chelsea' new signing

Benoît Badiashile is the only player born in the 21st century to have played more than 100 games in Ligue 1 (106 appearances).

Haaland watch

Haaland’s numbers are outstanding but Bournemouth, Brighton, Everton, Liverpool and Wolves have restricted him to two shots. Chelsea have kept him quiet so far but there is a long way to go.

Pulisic is now trying to run his knock off. The game continues.

Sterling went off and now Pulisic is down. This will be a disaster for Chelsea if he has to go off.

Ziyech takes the corner from the left. De Bruyne heads it away. 0-0

Pulisic is in but Stones comes across to block the USMNT forward with a fine challenge.

City link up nicely before feeding Gundogan through on the inside right channel. The German crosses low first time but Kepa comes off his line to claim it.

Ake deals with the Chelsea threat down the right and City recycle it. They have had the majority of the ball so far but have been unable to feed Haaland.

City have dropped points in two of their past four league outings (and five of 16 league games overall) to trail league leaders Arsenal by eight points.

Sterling started against his former club for the first time (he was a second-half substitute during November’s Carabao Cup loss at the Etihad) but has had to go off after just five minutes here.

Zakaria picks out the speedy Spaniard, who is driving towards the City box down the left channel. Cucurella unleashes an effort from 30 yards out that hits Ederson's side netting.

Cucurella wins it back for Chelsea near the corner flag as De Bruyne looked to get in behind the former Getafe left-back.

So Chelsea have been forced into making a very early change here as Sterling walks off behind the goal and Aubameyang comes in. Potter has some words with the former Arsenal man, who will take up a central position in attack.

Chelsea change

OFF Sterling

ON Aubameyang

It's all City in the opening five minutes. A win for Guardiola's team tonight would put them to within five points of league leaders Arsenal.

It's a coming together between Stones and Sterling and the latter is getting treatment as Aubameyang warms up.

Ake finds himself high on the left after a through-ball from Gundogan.

Sterling is on the ground after just two minutes.

The home side are playing from right to left. Both sides are playing in their home colours.

Chelsea get us underway!

There will be a minute's applause for Pelé, who died last week.

Potter shakes Guardiola's hand!

It's a mild night at Stamford Bridge. It's 2023 and we have some Thursday night Premier League football to enjoy.

Both sides need the points tonight so this one should be a cracker!

Kickoff is just minutes away now as both sides make their way onto the pitch.

The players are in the tunnel at Stamford Bridge.

Kickoff is just 10 minutes away!

Mount out

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount is out with a knock that was picked up in training yesterday so he misses out.

Man City have dropped points in five league games this season.

Chelsea are the only team yet to concede at home in the opening hour of a league game and will need to be on top of their game to make that six.

Chelsea and City draw

Both Chelsea and City were held to a draw in their last fixtures following victories when the Premier League restarted after the World Cup. The two sides meet again on Sunday in Manchester for an FA Cup tie.

Kickoff approaches

Just 30 minutes to go before this tasty Premier League fixture gets underway in London.

Who will win?

I'm going for a City win at the Bridge tonight.

Benfica manager on Chelsea’s attempts to sign Enzo Fernández: “It’s disrespectful”

Benfica manager on Chelsea’s attempts to sign Enzo Fernández: “It’s disrespectful”

Enzo Fernández has only been in Portugal for six months after Benfica paid €14 million to Argentinian giants River Plate in July. The 21-year-old is attracting attention in Europe after a strong showing at the 2022 World Cup, where he became a world champion with Argentina.

Fernández has helped his team to a 22-game unbeaten run and to win their Champions League group despite the presence PSG and Juventus. He then went on to establish himself in Argentina’s eleven and won FIFA’s award for Young Player of the Tournament.

Although he has just announced himself on the global stage, Chelsea look set to break the bank for the talented midfielder, but Benfica manager Roger Schmidt is not happy.

Manchester City starting XI

Walker, Cancelo, Foden, and Gundogan come in for City at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea XI

The Chelsea team is in!

Kovacic and Pulisic start, as does Ziyech. It’s the Morocco international's first league start for Chelsea since August and also his first under head coach Graham Potter.

Chelsea vs Man City: Match stats

Pep Guardiola has suffered eight defeats against Chelsea as a manager in all competitions, his joint-most against an opponent.

Before joining City, Raheem Sterling was involved in four goals in his last four Premier League games against them for Liverpool.

Erling Haaland has seven goals in six away Premier League games, scoring two in his only other appearance in London against West Ham.

Chelsea bolster their defence with Monaco centre-back Badiashile

Chelsea bolster their defence with Monaco centre-back Badiashile

Benoît Badiashile completed his move from Monaco to Chelsea on Thursday. The 21-year-old centre-back signed a seven-and-a-half-year contract with the Premier League side paying a fee reportedly in the region of €38 million for his services.

Badiashile, an international for France at Under-21 level, carved out a regular place in Monaco’s defence since making his first-team debut under coach Thierry Henry in November 2018.

City chasing Arsenal

A win for City tonight would move them to within five points of league leaders Arsenal.

Guardiola's side were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Everton on 31 December.

Match facts

Chelsea have lost seven of their last 10 Premier League games against Manchester City, including the last two league home games (three wins, no draws).

The last time City lost their first Premier League game of the calendar year was 11 years ago against Sunderland (1-0).
