Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández’s contract expires at the end of the 2022 Major League Soccer season and there have been no talks about a contract extension. However, there is a clause in his contract that if the Mexican international scores 12 or more goals this campaign, the Los Angeles Galaxy will automatically offer him a one year extension.

Hernández opens the door to a Chivas return

The Galaxy defeated Chivas 2-0 on Wednesday night in the Leagues Cup Showcase at SoFi Stadium, and this was the second time Chicharito had played against his boyhood club, the first since 2010. The 34-year-old talked about the possibility of returning to the Liga MX side next year and didn’t give a concrete answer because his future is up in the air.

“It is not about me wanting to return or not,” Hernández said during the post-game press conference. “I don’t want the narrative to be that Chivas needs me, because I would like to see them win the trophy each tournament without me. I love beautiful stories of players that leave and comeback or of players that stay at the same club all their career.

Other players don’t know if they will return to their boyhood club. Right now I am eternally thankful to the LA Galaxy and to the MLS for how they have treated me. So the love is there for Chivas and I gave everything when I played there.

“We will see what the future brings because I don’t know what will happen next year or if the Galaxy will extend my contract or not. So if there’s a second stint with Chivas I hope it’s for the best and if not, then I hope fans enjoyed my time there when I was there.”
