Liga MX’s two reigning scoring champions look headed for another down‑to‑the‑wire battle as the Clausura 2026 enters its final stretch - and matchday 13 of the regular season made that abundantly clear.

González edges ahead of João Pedro

Armando “La Hormiga” González surged ahead in the Golden Boot race with a standout brace that salvaged a dramatic draw for Chivas against Pumas. The Mexican striker buried a last-gasp penalty to preserve his unbeaten streak and move him to the top of the scoring charts. Meanwhile, João Pedro also found the net in Atlético San Luis’ victory over Monterrey.

González remains unstoppable this Clausura. He’s now up to 12 goals and sits alone atop the scoring race. Over Chivas’ last five matches, the Mexican has bagged seven goals - a blistering run that has solidified the Rebaño Sagrado as league leaders and the title favorite.

Before Sunday’s matches wrapped up, João Pedro had been leading the chart. The Italian continues to showcase elite quality in Mexican soccer at 34 years old. This weekend, the veteran striker scored in San Luis’ trip to face Rayados, securing all three points and deepening Monterrey’s struggles. He now has 11 goals in the Clausura - a pace that should have González looking over his shoulder.

Kevin Castañeda also climbed the rankings thanks to a thunderous strike from outside the box, as Tijuana beat Tigres.
