The Copa America group stage’s second round of games has started, with Argentina recording a decisive win over Chile that allows them to access the tournament’s quarterfinals, and as group A leaders. Canada managed to win their first match in the competition against Peru and they depend on themselves to get the ticket to the knockout rounds.
Lionel Messi’s side leads the standings with six points, while Canada comes second with three. Chile and Peru are tied to one point. If the Chileans beat Canada and Argentina does the same against Peru, they will progress, while Peru needs to defeat the current world champions by a wider margin than their neighbors Chile should vs. Canada to advance.
Copa America 2024: what games are on Wednesday 26 June?
Today it’s turn for the Group B teams, with Venezuela and Ecuador looking to take the top spot in an interesting clash. La Vinotinto pilled off the upset in the opening game, as Ecuador were the favorites to come out on top and regarded as one of Copa America’s darkhorses. Fernando Batista’s men came back from one goal down to reverse the score in the second half with a couple of goals.
Meanwhile, Mexico had to dig deep to get the three points against Jamaica, but El Tri secured their first win thanks to a Gerardo Arteaga goal.
Before that, Ecuador and Jamaica will go head-to-head in a do-or-die match for both teams, as defeat would translate into elimination for any of them. La Tricolor had only lost two of their last 10 games before facing Venezuela, so Félix Sánchez Bas will hope his players recover their best form to emerge victorious. As for The Reggae Boyz, they had only lost one of their last seven meetings before playing the Copa America, so an entertaining and tight affair is expected at Allegiant Stadium.
