Costa Rica vs Germany preview

One of the strongest squads in the World Cup, Germany, will go into the match vs Costa Rica in need of grabbing the three points, as they haven’t been able to win in their two previous clashes.

Hansi Flick’s men scored late in their game against Spain, a goal that could make the difference in the group stage, as they will be guaranteed to progress if they come out on top against their opponents and Japan can’t defeat Spain.

If both sides play out a draw, Germany would need to win by at least two goals to get second place, and if Hajime Moriyasu’s side upset La Roja, then Die Mannschaft would need a five-goal victory to eliminate Spain.

Meanwhile, Costa Rica, sitting third with three points, two more than Germany, are aware that a draw would be enough for them to advance to the next round if Spain overcome Japan.

Luis Fernando Suárez’s men will have the chance to win their second consecutive game in a World Cup for the first time since they did so in the 2014 edition.

Costa Rica

Centre-back Francisco Calvo picked up his second booking of the tournament against Japan and will miss the match due to suspension.

Sunderlands Jewison Bennette was dropped to the bench last weekend, but he could have a chance of featuring from the start in the crucial game vs Germany.

Germany

The return of Leroy Sané was certainly a boost for the German squad, as it proved against La Roja, while Flick may be doubting between Niclas Füllkrug and Thomas Müller up front.

Flick could also become the first Germany manager in history to fail to win any of his first three World Cup games, but the Germans defeated their opponents 4-2 in their only previous clash with Costa Rica, during the 2006 World Cup.

Costa Rica vs Germany prediction

This World Cup is proving to be very hard to predict, with quite a few upsets: Argentina defeated by Saudi Arabia, Germany beaten by the Japanese squad and Denmark being knocked out in the group stage with underdogs Australia progressing.

However, it will be Germany’s very last chance to avoid elimination against a team that is way weaker and that may feel the pressure in their last game.

Expect Germany’s talent to prove too strong for Costa Rica, who won’t be able to stand the European side’s pressure and fast-paced game.

Prediction: Costa Rica 1-3 Germany

Who is refereeing Costa Rica vs Germany?

French referee Stéphanie Frappart will take charge of the fixture. Alongside her are assistants Neuza Ines and Karen Diaz Medina, while the fourth official is Said Martinez.
