The Cruz Azul drama continues to intensify following a high-profile report by Mexican journalist David Faitelson, who questioned the club’s multi-million-dollar signing of Greek striker Giorgos Giakoumakis.

Cruz Azul president threatens legal action

Now, Víctor Velázquez—the president of Cruz Azul’s board of directors—has publicly entered the fray, suggesting legal action could be on the table.

No Cruz Azul leak

Velázquez granted a brief interview to ESPN, just days after Faitelson posted a video on social media defending his reporting. In that clip, Faitelson insisted his information did not come from anyone inside the club and repeatedly emphasized that he holds no grudge against Cruz Azul, its leadership, or its fans.

But Velázquez clearly sees things differently. In his interview, he raised serious concerns about a breach of contract, saying:

The contract itself includes a confidentiality clause, and that was violated. The only parties with access to it were Cruz Azul, MLS, the Mexican federation, and the player. We’re investigating the source of the leak, and if necessary, we’ll take legal action.

“I don’t think it helps Mexican soccer to have these contracts made public—it puts the involved parties at risk. We’re always trying to raise the level of Liga MX by bringing in better players, but these are costly operations. What would it take to bring in an Ángel Correa, a Gignac, a Canales, a Sergio Ramos, a Paulinho, or a Helinho? When information like this is exposed... I don’t know what the goal is.”

Velázquez also dismissed the idea that the leak may have come from inside the club.

“I’m not worried at all. This administration has been completely transparent. In fact, every contract and transaction is shared with the cooperative’s members. Everyone involved knows exactly what we’re doing, what deals we’ve made, and what contracts we’ve signed.

“What does concern me is the message this sends and the image it creates of Mexican soccer. Instead of helping, this kind of thing does real damage.”

Velázquez closed by doubling down on his position: the confidentiality clause was broken, and if they identify the source of the leak, Cruz Azul will pursue legal action.

La Máquina continue to be in the news for all the wrong reasons, with this latest incident coming hot on the heels of a 7-0 humiliation at the hands of Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup, and long-time target Luka Jovic turning down a move to Mexico.
