David Beckham’s Inter Miami project is struggling in MLS this season

After two wins in a row, Phil Neville’s men have lost five on the bounce, leaving questions surrounding Beckham’s plans.

When David Beckham announced he was becoming co-owner of MLS team Inter Miami, expectations were high as the ideas was one of excitement and anticipation. However, three years later, the project of the English football legend has failed to take off in the North American league.

After an encouraging start with two wins in 2023, Phil Neville’s side have racked up five losses in a row and have failed to establish themselves anywhere near the top of the MLS standings.

The project is simply not working

Despite their successful attempts at luring once-world-class players such as Gonzalo Higuaín, a World Cup regular with Argentina and former Real Madrid striker, as well as world champion Blaise Matuidi, they have not managed to put together a project that has had any success.

For this season, the club did not hesitate in signing someone proven in MLS: Venezuelan Josef Martínez. However, he was recently singled out by the head coach as one of those responsible for the bad run of form that Inter Miami are suffering.

“He needs to play better, he needs to play better” Inter Miami head coach Phil Neville said of the Venezuelan striker after a 1-0 home loss to FC Dallas on Saturday night. “This was the first time we played with two strikers. I’ve got to say, I don’t think we had a shot on goal in the first half. Did we get him the service? Probably not... We need more of Josef, without a shadow of a doubt” he assured with a stern face in the post-match press conference.

Inter Miami will have a long break now ahead of their next game, since they will return to the field until Saturday, April 22 when they face the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium.
