Edson Álvarez might have to wait until Jude Bellingham finds his team

The Mexican midfielder is a top priority for Borussia Dortmund, but the German club may have to sell before they buy.

Ajax star Edson Álvarez is thought to be close to a move away from Ajax, but his destination is dependent on another of this summer’s long-expected transfers.

The Mexican holding midfielder is an all-action presence in the middle of the pitch for Ajax, first securing his place in the team under Erik Ten Hag. These qualities have made Álvarez a top target for Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, who may soon be looking for a top quality replacement in their midfield.

Dortmund narrowly missed out on the Bundesliga title and now look set to lose their most important player. For Edin Terzić’s side, this summer’s transfer business will be crucial.

Álvarez move could hinge on Real Madrid decision

Dortmund are thought to be in pole position to sign Álvarez and their interest in the player makes a good deal of sense. Reports suggest that the Bundesliga club are resigned to losing Jude Bellingham to one of the world’s elite clubs.

The England midfielder is still only 19 but has already established himself as one of the best midfielders in world football. He was named Bundesliga Player of the Year last week and even captained his side earlier this year.

Real Madrid appear confident of securing Bellingham’s services and that would leave Dortmund in need of a replacement. Álvarez would not be a like-for-like but he could bolster their strength in midfield And with a fee of more than €100 million in the offing, they will have plenty of money to bring in Álvarez in his place.

Does Álvarez want to move?

Dortmund have not yet agreed a fee with Ajax for Álvarez but they may be able to tempt him away. The midfielder came through the ranks at Mexican side América but moved to the Netherlands at the age of 21. Ajax finished a disappointing third place in the Dutch league, 13 points adrift of champions Feyenoord.

In an interview with Dutch media outlet Voetbal International, Álvarez admitted that he could be tempted by a move.

“I spent four wonderful years here and this place still feels like home to me. I won a lot of trophies and developed,” Álvarez said. “This is what could make it the right time to take the next step in my career. But everything has to be perfect. I have to improve, but so do Ajax.”

“Of course it’s nice when you are linked with a big club, but Ajax is also a big club. So I will always show respect to everyone in and around Amsterdam. I am very grateful to everyone here,” he continued.
