As if a 4-0 defeat to Real Madrid weren’t painful enough for Barcelona, Eintracht Frankfurt have sought to rub salt in Blaugrana wounds with their reaction to the Catalans’ Copa del Rey thrashing at the Camp Nou.

Frankfurt rib Barcelona with Spanish tweet

The Germans, who knocked Barça out of last season’s Europa League, took the opportunity after Wednesday’s Clásico to reminisce about their famous continental triumph over the LaLiga leaders.

On their official Spanish-language Twitter account, Frankfurt posted a photo from their decisive second-leg win at the Camp Nou in April 2022, accompanied by the caption: “Esta fiesta blanca ya la vimos...” This roughly translates as: “Party time for the team in white - we’ve seen that before…

Eintracht beat Barça at Camp Nou packed with German fans

Frankfurt eliminated Barça from the 2021/22 Europa League quarter-finals with a 3-2 victory at the Camp Nou, following a 1-1 opening-leg draw in Germany.

The return leg in Spain is best remembered for the presence of an estimated 30,000 Frankfurt fans in Barcelona’s stadium - some six times their official allocation, and almost half the total attendance of just under 80,000.

Speaking after the European defeat, Barça president Joan Laporta described himself as “embarrassed and ashamed” that travelling supporters had been allowed to get hold of so many tickets, while Frankfurt head coach Oliver Glasner admitted: “I thought we were playing at home.”

Having beaten Barça, the Bundesliga club went on to win the competition - their first ever major European silverware.

Madrid claim biggest Camp Nou win since 60s

In Wednesday’s Clásico at the Camp Nou, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema scored a second-half hat-trick - the Frenchman’s second treble in as many games - as Carlo Ancelotti’s side booked their place in the Copa del Rey final for the first time since 2014.

Vinícius Júnior also scored for Madrid, who will face Osasuna in the trophy decider in Seville in May.

Los Blancos hadn’t scored four goals in an away clash against Barça since a 5-1 win over their arch rivals back in January 1963.
