El Tráfico: Which players have played for LAFC and LA Galaxy?
The two Los Angeles teams are among the most well-known in MLS but only a select few players have represented both sides.
This Saturday BMO Stadium will play host to the 22nd edition of MLS’ El Tráfico derby, the clash between LAFC and LA Galaxy. The two Los Angeles sides are among the most high-profile teams in the league and both have enjoyed real success in the past.
The LA Galaxy were one of the most dominant teams in the first 20 years of MLS, winning a league-high five MLS Cups. But the Galaxy have not finished as champions since 2014 and, in recent years, their new neighbours have up-staged them. LAFC won the Supporters Shield in 2019 and 2022, going on to lift MLS Cup in the second of those campaigns.
The two stadiums are just 12 miles apart in Los Angeles but surprisingly few players have turned out for both teams. In the six-year history of the rivalry only three players have represented both LAFC and LA Galaxy.
Those players are Niko Hämäläinen, Raheem Edwards and John McCarthy. Hämäläinen has left MLS and Edwards signed for CF Montreal in the off-season, but McCarthy is very much still involved in the El Tráfico rivalry.
Will John McCarthy play for LA Galaxy against LAFC?
Goalkeeper John McCarthy has had a circuitous route to the top flight of US soccer and has not always been given many chances to impress in MLS. He started off with USL Professional Development League club Ocean City Nor’easters in 2011 and played for four non-MLS teams before signing with Philadelphia Union in 2015.
McCarthy went on to represent Inter Miami for two years in 2020 and 2021 before moving on to LAFC. He was the club’s back-up goalkeeper for much of their MLS Cup-winning 2022 campaign but got his chance in the final against Philadelphia Union, coming on to replace regular starter Maxime Crepeau after he suffered a shocking leg-break.
The Philadelphia-born stopper was the hero for LAFC as they triumphed on a penalty shoot-out but he lost his starting berth once Crepeau returned in 2023. With his opportunities at LAFC curtailed McCarthy opted to move to LA Galaxy in the off-season and has become the team’s first choice keeper. He is expected to start against his former team on Saturday evening.
