Either side of a semi-final finish at Euro 2017 - where they were knocked out by a Netherlands side coached by current England boss Sarina Wiegman - the Lionesses had to settle for third and fourth place, respectively, at the World Cups in 2015 and 2019.
In France three years ago, England were beaten to the bronze by Sweden, who have also endured their fair share of near-misses in recent tournaments. Semi-final heartache at World Cup 2019 came in between back-to-back gold-medal match losses at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics.
The Swedes have a European title to their name, though: the Blågult won the competition’s inaugural edition in 1984 - and it was England they defeated in the final, despite a 1-0 loss in the second leg at Luton’s Kenilworth Road. That remains Sweden’s only defeat to the English in a competitive match.
England reached the Euro 2022 semis with a 2-1 extra-time win over Spain in the quarter-finals, while Peter Gerhardsson’s Sweden saw off Belgium 1-0 thanks to a 92nd-minute goal by Linda Sembrant. The winner of Tuesday’s semi-final in Sheffield will face Germany or France in the final at Wembley on Saturday.
