Along with Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé has been the main protagonist of the summer 2023 transfer window. With the Argentina captain’s move to Inter Miami done and dusted, most of the attention now surrounds the French superstar, who has made it clear to Paris Saint-Germain that he has no intention of extending his contract past 2024 but wants to stay for the 2023/24 season.

Real Madrid have long been linked with a move for the striker, who PSG have given an ultimatum: sign an extended deal or be sold. But with Mbappé still under contract and determined to stay put, it is he who holds all the cards.

Mbappé brothers set to make PSG history

If the 24-year-old does end up remaining in Paris for another year, then it looks as if there is every chance he could play alongside younger brother Ethan, who new head coach Luis Enrique has had training with the first team in the early part of pre-season. At just 16 years old, the younger Mbappé is in contention to feature in PSG’s first summer friendly against Le Havre, as is Kylian. The pair could become the first brothers in history to play together for the club.

What kind of player is Ethan Mbappé?

Ethan has already turned out for the PSG senior team, playing in a friendly against Paris FC in December 2022 when his sibling was busy scoring a hat-trick for France in the World Cup final. Not that we should be expecting too many goalscoring heroics from the younger Mbappé, a technical, left-footed player, who pulls the strings from central midfield.

“He’s a lad who works really hard, with lots of energy and quality on the ball. Sometimes he’s too aggressive; he needs to learn to control that”, said PSG under-19s coach Zoumana Camara. “I know he’s an Mbappé, but he’s just one of the lads here. I’ve worked with his brother and sometimes his face reminds me of Kylian. But he doesn’t get special treatment”.

Ethan’s chance to impress Luis Enrique

While PSG - and France - have very high hopes for Ethan, the midfielder reaching the same levels of superstardom as Kylian are thought to be somewhat less likely. But at just 16 years of age, time is very much on his side, and he will hope to impress alongside his brother in pre-season to ensure he is still in Luis Enrique’s thoughts by the time the competitive action comes around.
