Fede Valverde will miss the Champions League match between Real Madrid and RB Leipzig on Tuesday 25 October. The Uruguayan midfielder was fouled by Sevilla’s Papu Gómez towards the end of Madrid’s 3-1 win on Saturday night. The Sevilla player stepped on Valverde’s left ankle and was booked minutes later as referee Hernández Hernández failed to spot the incident.

At first, there were fears of something more serious, but his partner, Mina Bonino, provided an update: “Fede feels fine, but we don’t really know if he’s okay. It’s a blow and it was hard. We have to see how it evolves. We don’t think it’s anything, but we can’t confirm anything yet,” she wrote on her Twitter account. On Sunday, Valverde underwent tests, which showed bruising. The in-form midfielder will be out for a few days, and Carlo Ancelotti will be able to count on him for next Sunday’s game against Girona.

Valverde and Benzema out for Leipzig clash

He joins Karim Benzema, Mariano Díaz and Dani Ceballos on the sidelines. The Ballon d’Or winner is suffering from quadriceps muscle fatigue in his left leg, which ruled him out of the game against Sevilla, after playing against Barcelona and Elche in the midweek fixture. The French striker has been working with the club physios and is feeling better but will miss the match against Leipzig.

Both Mariano and Ceballos are making progress with their respective injuries and have been training alone. They are expected to rejoin the rest of the squad in the coming days. As a result of Valverde’s injury, Ancelotti will be forced to change his usual eleven. Marco Asensio, who has been making the most of his opportunities off the bench, is the most likely to have a place in the starting eleven against the German side.
