Controversy in Mexico after Toluca stars are excused international duty to play CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinal
Chivas owner Amaury Vergara accused the federation of giving special treatment to Vega and Gallardo and asked his international to report back for duty.

A tiny shift was all it took to ignite a firestorm in Mexican soccer. Until just hours ago, Liga MX clubs had been honoring a firm agreement: every Mexico national team player based in the domestic league would step away from their clubs — first to rest, then to begin World Cup preparations.
But everything changed when it became public that the Mexico had quietly authorized Jesús Gallardo and Alexis Vega to rejoin their club for the second leg of the semifinals against LAFC. That revelation blew the lid off the situation.
With all eyes suddenly on Toluca and a flood of criticism swirling around the club, Chivas owner Amaury Vergara seized the moment. Posting on social media, he argued that if Toluca was granted an exception, then the agreement shouldn’t apply to everyone else. Even without an official response from the federation, Vergara has already issued marching orders to his players and front office.

Amaury Vergara tells his international players to report back
Chivas has more national team call-ups than any other Liga MX club — five in total — and Vergara wasted no time invoking Toluca’s precedent. He wants his full roster available for the second leg of their quarterfinal matchup against Tigres.
“Agreements only work when all parties respect them. I’ve instructed our sporting department to have our players report to the club tomorrow,” Vergara wrote.
It’s a high‑stakes move. Chivas dropped the first leg of the Clausura 2026 quarterfinals 3–1, and having their complete squad available for the return match could dramatically shift the outlook.

Federation expected to respond by Wednesday morning
The Mexican federation and the national team staff are now under pressure to take a clear stance by early Wednesday morning.
For now, and until either of the two upcoming matches is played, the original agreement technically remains in place — even if the situation is already spiraling.
