Gabriel Slonina set to travel to London and train with Chelsea
The American goalkeeper missed the Chicago Fire’s last two games with a head injury and his immediate future is not yet decided.
Chicago Fire failed to secure a spot in the 2022 MLS Cup play-offs and goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina missed the last two games of the regular season due to a head injury. The Fire had a poor ending to their season with a 1-1 draw against the New England Revolution and they only won two matches of their last ten.
Slonina’s future is up in the air
The American goalkeeper is now set to travel to London to join Chelsea for a ‘training stint.’ Slonina will be training with the Premier League side for a couple of weeks and then return to the United States in anticipation of being included in the USMNT World Cup squad.
Slonina has yet to receive a call up to the United States men’s national team, so chances of him traveling to Qatar next month are minimal. After the keeper returns from his ‘training stint’ it is not known if he will officially join Chelsea in January or if he will be sent on loan to another team.
Gabriel Slonina finished the MLS regular season with 12 clean sheets and conceded 32 goals in 32 appearances with the Chicago Fire in his first year as the starting goalkeeper. The American goalkeeper will have to wait until January to define his immediate future because at Chelsea he has to fight for minutes with Kepa Arrizabalaga, Édouard Mendy and Marcus Bettinelli.
