What a turn around it has been at the Theater of Dreams over the last few months. It was a tragic comedy under Ruben Amorim for the first half of the season but Michael Carrick has come in and brought order to a Manchester United team that is inching closer to next year’s Champions League campaign.

Some pieces in place at United

To play in the Champions League you need a deep squad. Midweek game are a commonality when you are playing in the top international competition in Europe. While Michael Carrick has done a fantastic job turning things around with the players he inherited, club legend Gary Neville knows that this team is far from ready to compete at that level.

Sitting in third place with an 11 point advantage over Brighton who are currently sixth in the league and are just below the cut line of Champions play, United has all but secured their spot in next year’s campaign. When asked what his former club will need to sign in the summer, the former Red Devil captain laid it out very simply.

“If you said to me a top centre-half and two good midfield players, that’s what this squad needs right now,” affirmed Neville on Sky Sports Q&A program. “To be fair, it does need other things after that, but I would say, to me, they dealt with the wide areas.”

Dream vs. Reality

There are some pieces in place, and Neville seems to think a good core of this team will play an important role in the campaign to come. “They’ve got Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Mason Mount who can play there a little bit, so I’m actually okay with that. I think No.10s with Mount and Bruno Fernandes, Bruno plays there every week, he’s reliable.”

Then Neville allowed himself to fantasize a bit, giving a perfect world scenario in which United were not only able to attract but afford some of the top players in the world. “It’s two central midfield players and definitely a centre-half, we need a top centre-half. Dream world, it would be Marquinhos, Declan Rice and Harry Kane.” All three of those players are playing a massive role in their respective club’s run to the Champions League semifinal.

Neville knows that United is unlikely to sign one of those players, let alone all three so he does have a back up plan. “Realistic, I’m going [Sandro] Tonali, [Elliot] Anderson and I’m going [Ezri] Konsa.”

Konsa is one of the most underrated defenders in the Premier League on an Aston Villa team likely to secure a top five spot. Anderson plays with Nottingham Forest and the midfielder could be a part England’s World Cup squad this year. Tonali is the biggest star of the three Neville is targeting. After a successful run at Newcastle, the Italian has been linked to some of the top clubs around Europe.
