Official: Infantino to seek re-election as FIFA president
The governing body’s president has confirmed that he will run for a fourth and final term at next year’s FIFA Elective Congress.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino says he will seek another term as head of world soccer’s governing body.
Speaking at the FIFA Congress in Vancouver today, Infantino said: “I want to confirm to you that I will be a candidate for the FIFA election of president next year.”
New rules allow Infantino to run again
If successful, Infantino would secure a fourth term as FIFA president - something that was not possible until the most recent change to the organization’s statutes.
Under the new rules, terms that begin mid‑cycle, as was the case with Infantino’s opening mandate, no longer count toward the limit. That adjustment is what allows him to seek another four years at the helm of FIFA.
Infantino, 56, was first chosen as FIFA chief in February 2016, before earning re-election in June 2019 and March 2023. The body is due to hold its next presidential vote at the 77th FIFA Elective Congress in 2027, with the Moroccan city Rabat set to host.
Infantino secures crucial backing
Even before Infantino announced his intention to run next year, the South American confederation (CONMEBOL) and the African confederation (CAF) had already pledged their support for the incumbent. That backing makes it all but impossible for a challenger with sufficient support to emerge and unseat Infantino.
