Gilberto Mora’s performances at the 2026 World Cup put him firmly on the radar of international soccer, and speculation about his future continues to grow.
However, as Jorge Hank confirmed, “Morita” is set to remain with Club Tijuana for at least one more Liga MX tournament, where he will try to help Xolos capture their second league title.
At just 17 years old, Mora already has experience across four Liga MX tournaments. The 2026 Apertura will be his fifth campaign in Mexico’s top flight. Despite his young age, the midfielder has already logged 2,887 minutes in 53 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing two assists.
Abreu’s project
Mora spent much of the 2026 Clausura sidelined with pubalgia, limiting his ability to help Tijuana qualify for the playoffs after the club finished ninth in the regular-season standings. However, following Kevin Castañeda’s move to Chivas, this season presents the ideal opportunity for the new No. 10 to prove he has the maturity and leadership to carry the team.
That will depend in large part on the management of head coach Sebastián “El Loco” Abreu, who is well aware of the special talent he has at his disposal.
“Today we’re used to players who are powerful, fast, wingers who destroy you one-on-one. He brings the street soccer element – the composure, the dribble, the playmaker’s touch, the subtle pass, the ball that nobody else sees,” the coach said. “He’s a player who gives you so much enjoyment and never stops surprising you.
“We’ve been here for more than a year, and after every training session we’re still saying, ‘Did you see what he just did?’ He always comes up with something unexpected because he has that street soccer mentality. He understands his tactical responsibilities but never loses the joy of playing.”
