In the decisive clash, the away team took the lead through national team player Lynn Williams, who scored from inside the penalty area after a pass from Midge Purce. It is noteworthy that Williams later became a four-time champion in the women’s league.

The equalizer came swiftly, though, nullifying the joy for Gotham. In the 29th minute, it was 1-1 courtesy of Rose Lavelle, following a phenomenal break through the center of the pitch and a precise finish at the near post of Mandy McGlynn’s goal. This ignited jubilation among all their fans in the Californian venue, witnessing a historic attendance of 25,011 supporters.

As the first half drew to a close, the New Yorkers secured their second, with the world champion from the Spanish National Team, Esther González, delivering a sensational header in the second minute of added on time. The ball came from a corner kick on the left side, orchestrated by another assist from Midge Purce, who tallied two key passes for goals in the grand final.

Excitement until the end of the NWSL final

In the 97th minute, goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn received a red card, but this did not impact Gotham FC’s claim to the title. They secured another championship in the National Women’s Soccer League, lifting the trophy at the Snapdragon Stadium amidst a jubilant celebration, particularly for Ali Krieger, who bid farewell to football on a high note.
