Despite América’s triumph against Puebla, Henry Martín was unable to score, thus missing out on the possibility of being top scorer in the Apertura 2022.

The Eagles strike came into the game against La Franja with 10 goals in his personal account, one below the current top scorer in the competition, Argentinean Nicolás Ibáñez, who plays for Pachuca.

Ámerica’s goals were scored by the Colombian Roger Martínez and Spaniard Álvaro Fidalgo, with Henry failing to increase his tally, leaving the way clear for Ibáñez to be crowned the top scorer of the season.

It’s now been three years since the last time a Mexican topped the scoring charts. That was back in the 2019 Apertura when Alan Pulido, then playing for Chivas, shared the title with the Argentine Mauro Quiroga, both with 12 goals.

Barragan also misses out

The other Mexican who also had hopes of becoming top scorer was Martín Barragán, from Puebla, but he also failed to score in the game against América. La Franja’s goal was the work of Israel Reyes.

Martín left his record in this Apertura 2022 at eight goals, far from any possibility of being crowned top scorer.

The list of Mexican top scorers in the history of short-format tournaments in Mexico remains at nine.
