Club América and Chivas Gudalajara lock horns again on Wednesday evening the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 clash. The CONCACAF fixture is the second of three matches between the two old rivals in just ten days.

A quirk of scheduling has ensured that supporters will get a hat-trick of Súper Clásicos in little over a week, with bragging rights on offer in each engrossing fixture. The first of the three-game mini-series was surprisingly one-sided; América ran out 3-0 winners.

The Mexico City side have one foot already in the quarter-finals but still need to keep their concentration in the second leg. One América player who will be particularly focused is striker Henry Martín, who is closing in on a piece of Súper Clásico history.

Club América top scorers against Chivas

The 3-0 first leg victory for América was secured with an additional time goal from Henry Martín, who has built up an impressive goal-scoring record in Súper Clásicos. The Mexican forward struck late-on to add a layer of gloss to his side’s triumph and push himself up the all-time rankings for América scorers against Chivas.

América return to home soil for the second leg against Chivas and few would bet against him adding to his tally on Wednesday. In fact, if Martín performs well in the two upcoming fixtures he could find himself in the history books before the end of the month. Here’s how the current top five looks...

Club América's top Súper Clásico scorers

  • Luis Alves Zague - 10 goals
  • José Alves Zague - 8 goals
  • Henry Martin - 7 goals
  • Moacyr Santos – 7 goals
  • Ricardo Peláez - 6 goals

Just three goals separate the ‘Bomba Yucateca’ from current leader Zague Jr. If he can continue his current form and take advantage of an inconsistent Chivas side he could begin to push further up the all-time standings.

This year could be Martín’s last chance to make history with América and record yet more goals against their long-time rivals. The Mexican striker has been the subject of constant transfer speculation and would not be short of suitors this summer if he desires new surroundings. AS USA has previously reported that Liga MX rivals Monterrey and MLS side Portland Timbers have expressed an interest in securing his services when his contract expires later this year.
