What is Club América’s recent record against Chivas, Cruz Azul and Pumas? When did they last lose to their rivals?

Las Águilas defeated their Liga MX opponents in the CONCACAF Champions League, continuing their fine form against Mexico’s other biggest clubs.

Club América are Mexican soccer’s most successful club when it comes to trophies won in the professional era, ahead of Chivas, Cruz Azul and Pumas. And Las Águilas have also had the upper hand in head-to-head clashes against those three opponents, as was the case once more in Wednesday’s emphatic CONCACAF Champions Cup victory away to Guadalajara.

América continue dominance over Chivas

In their last 10 matches against Chivas, América have won six times, drawn twice and lost only twice, scoring 16 goals and conceding nine in those matches. May 2023 was the last time Ame were beaten by Los Rojiblancos, who ran out 3-1 winners at Estadio Azteca in the semi-finals of the Clausura 2023 tournament.

Las Águilas turn Clásico Jóven record around

Cruz Azul had been doing significantly better against their Clásico Joven rivals, who they didn’t lose to in eight regular-season games between October 2018 and April 2022. Since then, however, Las Águilas have won the last four in a row, including 7-0 in August 2022. América have outscored La Máquina 18 goals to 12 in the last 10 meetings and have won four times compared to their opponents’ three, with three draws. Cruz Azul’s last win in the fixture came back in November 2021.

UNAM unable to match América in recent derbies

Pumas have fared fairly well against América over the years, but that hasn’t been the case in recent times. UNAM have lost each of the last four Clásicos Capitalinos, while they have won only one of the last 10 meetings, five of which have ended in a tie. In those encounters, Los Azulcreams have outscored their opponents by 14 to six. Pumas’ last victory against their city rivals also came in November 2021.

Club América defeated Cruz Azul by a goal to nil at Estadio Azteca at the end of February in the Clausura 2024 tournament, although they have yet to face either Chivas or Pumas, who they will meet in the league on 16 March and 20 April respectively.

André Jardine’s men will play the return leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup round-of-16 tie against Guadalajara at Estadio Azteca on Wednesday 13 March, with anything better than a two-goal loss good enough to secure a quarterfinal spot.
