The Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals kickoff tonight from Tennessee as Nashville SC continue their historic run through a tournament they have never won. They host Tigres UANL in the first leg of the tie taking place from GEODIS Park.

Nashville’s tale of the tape

Nashville are on to the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup for the first time in their brief history. The club that joined the MLS in 2020 has been gaining relevance not just in the domestic league but in the international cup as well and they are already in unchartered territory. This is just the second appearance for Nashville in this tournament, and after crashing out in the 2024 edition to Inter Miami, they are in the semis, and knocking on the door of a trip to the final.

This club has done it with defense both in the MLS and in the Concacaf Champions Cup. Through three rounds and six matches in the CCC Nashville SC have allowed just one goal. That came in the round of 16 second leg against Inter Miami when Messi scored a goal in the 7th minute. That goal was canceled out by Cristian Espinoza equalizer which sent Nashville through on away goals. They won the first round in a 7-0 aggregate over Atletico Ottawa, a 1-1 aggregate over Inter Miami, and last round they got past Cruz Azul with a 1-0 aggregate thanks to a Hany Mukhtar goal in the 51st minute of the second leg.

In the MLS, Nashville are at the top of the Eastern Conference with a record of 7-1-1. They are coming off a 4-2 win over Charlotte at the weekend, and have scored 21 goals while allowing just 6 in nine matches. Much of their success can be attributed to keeper Brian Schwake. He has seen 20 shots on target in the CCC, and stopped 19 of them including a eight in the second leg of the quarterfinals against Cruz Azul.

Tigres UANL tale of the tape

Tigres UANL are looking to a return trip to the Concacaf Champions Cup final. It´s been six years since they have made an appearance in the title game of the tournament after making a habit of it a decade ago. They qualified for their first CCC back in 2011, and made their first final in the 2015-16 campaign. They would make the final in three of four years but fall short on each trip to the title match. That would all change when they met LAFC in the final in 2020 and beat the Californians for their first CCC title ever.

Since then they have been looking for a return to the final, and they are as close as they have been in six years. It’s been a thrilling run to the semis for the Liga MX side. The first leg set them up with a tie against Canadian side Forge FC. They got past the Ontario based club in a 4-1 aggregate. Things got complicated in their round of 16 tie with FC Cincinnati when they lost the first leg 3-0 away from home. Tigres returned home and needed a 98th minute goal from Fernando Gorriaran to topple Cincinnati 5-1 to take the 5-4 aggregate and move on to the quarters. In the quarters they met Seattle, and won the first leg 2-0 before Joaquim scored an away goal to book their trip to the semis after a 3-3 aggregate with the MLS side.

In Liga MX, they are right in the middle of the table with a record of 7-4-6 in the Clausura. Eleven points off the lead through 14 match days, they are all in on a title run in the CCC. In the domestic league, it’s Juan Francisco Brunetta who leads the team in scoring with 18 goals in the 40 matches played in the Apertura and Clausura. In the CCC it’s a different story. Rodrigo Aguirre has scored 4 goals in the five matches he’s played in this tournament. Ozziel Herrera has scored another three goals
