Update:

Since Liga MX adopted the short-tournament format in 1996, the landscape of Mexican soccer has changed dramatically.

This system allowed several clubs to quickly expand their trophy collections, cementing some as perennial contenders and even prompting others to declare themselves among the nation’s “big clubs”.

Club América and Toluca lead the way in the short-tournament era, each boasting eight titles since the format’s inception just under three decades ago.

From 1996 to today, Liga MX has staged 53 tournaments, though only 52 championships have been awarded, due to the cancellation of the Clausura 2020 amid the covid-19 pandemic.

Toluca’s historic feat against Tigres

On Sunday, Toluca pulled off a historic achievement by defeating Tigres in the final to claim back-to-back titles, reaffirming its stature in Mexican soccer.

With this triumph, the Red Devils didn’t just add another trophy to their cabinet - they strengthened their excellent record in the short-tournament era.

Toluca surpasses several of Mexico’s big names

Since 1996, indeed, Toluca is well ahead of three of the so-called “big four” in Mexican soccer.

Los Diablos Rojos surpass the combined efforts of Cruz Azul (2 titles), Chivas (3), and Pumas (4) - a trio that has managed just nine championships between them under the short-tournament format.

Who has the most Liga MX titles overall?

Toluca’s Apertura 2025 triumph brings its overall total to 12 Liga MX titles, drawing the club level with Chivas Guadalajara as the second-most-decorated team in the entire history of the Mexican league. Only América, with 16, has more:

  • Club América: 16
  • Chivas, Toluca: 12
  • Cruz Azul: 9
  • Tigres, León: 8
  • Pachuca, Pumas: 7
