How many penalties has David Raya saved? The Arsenal goalkeeper's success rate

As PSG and Arsenal face off in the Champions League final at Budapest’s Puskás Aréna on May 30, both teams arrive as champions of their respective domestic leagues and led by Spanish managers. With so little expected to separate the two sides, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya could play a pivotal role in determining who lifts Europe’s biggest club trophy.

David Raya’s rise at Arsenal

The 30-year-old Spanish international joined Arsenal from Brentford in 2023 after catching Mikel Arteta’s attention with his distribution and shot-stopping ability. Although there were early questions about whether he should start ahead of Aaron Ramsdale, Raya eventually established himself as Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Since then, he has developed into one of the world’s top goalkeepers and become a regular presence with Spain’s national team. For this summer’s World Cup, he has been selected alongside Joan García and Unai Simón as part of La Roja’s goalkeeping group.

David Raya’s penalty-saving record

Throughout his professional career, Raya has saved six penalties during regular play. The most recent came in May 2025, when he denied Portuguese midfielder Vitinha from the spot during a Champions League meeting between Arsenal and PSG. Despite the save, the French side went on to win the game 2-1.

When he first arrived in North London, Raya faced criticism from some observers who felt he committed too early when facing penalty kicks. Over time, however, he has refined his approach and continued to establish himself as one of Europe’s most reliable goalkeepers.

According to Transfermarkt statistics, Raya has conceded 40 penalties in regular play, giving him a save rate of approximately 15%. Those figures do not include penalty shootouts, where goalkeepers often have additional opportunities to influence major matches.

The last penalty Raya faced came in the first leg against Atlético Madrid. On that occasion, Argentine forward Julián Álvarez converted from the spot, adding another chapter to the goalkeeper’s record ahead of one of the biggest games of his career.
