The Premier League title race is set for its most pivotal moment of the season so far on Wednesday, as second-placed Manchester City host leaders Arsenal in a crunch top-of-the-table match-up.
Manchester City one win from top if they beat Arsenal
City know their fate is in their own hands: if they beat the North Londoners, they’ll move to within two points of Mikel Arteta’s men, with another game still in hand.
And among the chief weapons at Pep Guardiola’s disposal at the Etihad Stadium will be a blistering forward line spearheaded by Erling Haaland.
In his first season in English soccer, one thing that has characterised Haaland has been his ability to hit the net in games against other members of the Premier League’s so-called ‘big six’. Indeed, the Norwegian has already scored once against Arsenal already this season.
As he bids to overtake Mo Salah’s record haul of 32 goals in a 38-game Premier League season - and reel in Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole’s all-time mark of 34 - Haaland will look to hurt the Gunners once more and boost City’s title prospects.
How many league goals has Haaland scored against ‘big six’ teams?
In total this season, Haaland has made seven appearances against ‘big six’ opposition in the Premier League: two against Manchester United, one against Liverpool, one against Chelsea, two against Tottenham Hotspur and one against Arsenal.
Of that group, United have been the 22-year-old’s chief victim. The striker bagged a hat-trick in City’s 6-3 thumping of the Red Devils in October, in addition to supplying two assists.
Tottenham and Arsenal are next among Haaland’s favourite ‘big six’ opposition so far, having both conceded one goal to the former Borussia Dortmund star.
Meanwhile, Chelsea and Liverpool are the only two Premier League giants who have kept Haaland at bay in the top flight, although he did score one against the Reds in the EFL Cup fourth round.
In total, then, Haaland has managed five league goals against other ‘big six’ sides since his summer 2022 arrival in Manchester.
