A spot in the quarterfinals in up for grabs from Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto as Costa Rica giants meet LAFC for the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The winner moves on after a draw in the first leg from Los Angeles just a week ago.

Alajuelense

The Costa Ricans had a Bye in the first round of the tournament after winning the 2025 CONCACAF Centeral American Cup. They are back in the CCC for a fourth year running and ninth time in history.

They won the Cup in 2004 when they took on another Costa Rican side in Saprissa in the first final between two Costa Rican clubs. Los Menudos also won it in 1986 for their first title, and they will look to take a step towards number three in club history.

The Ticos won their Apertura after suffering just two losses in the entire campaign, and now are fourth in Costa Rica, five points off the league leaders after 12 matches. They are led by players Joel Campbell, Celso Borges and former MLSers Ronald Matarrita and Ronaldo Cisneros.

LAFC

The Los Angeles club are one of nine MLS clubs in the round of 16, and looking to be the first ones to reach the quarterfinals. They breezed past Honduran side Real España with a 7-1 aggregated in the first round, and now looking to get back to make a run to the finals for what would be the third time in their history.

The club that joined MLS in March of 2018 has already appeared in two CONCACAF Champions Cup finals. The first trip to the final resulted in a 2-1 loss to Tigers UANL. They returned to the final in 2023 but lost to Club Leon de Mexico 3-1.

They are led by a trio of trouble with Dennis Bouanga Son Hueng-Min and David Martinez. Martinez was injured early in last week’s first leg, but Bouanga is looking to carry the weight with four goals in the CCC. Meanwhile Hueng-Min has a goal and four assists in the CCC campaign. The MLS has just started and LAFC is a perfect four of four with four wins, zero draws and zero losses.

First leg

The first match ended in a draw from BMO Stadium, with the Costa Ricans taking a massive result back home following an opening goal from Alejandro Bran Flores a minutes before the halftime break. Bouanga answered in the 56th minute as both teams shared the spoils, and left it all to play for in Costa Rica.
