Iraola’s first words as Liverpool head coach excite the fans
The Basque coach spoke publicly for the first time since being named as the new Liverpool manager.
Pen and paper? Check. New tracksuit? Check. Multi-coloured cones? Check. Media duties done? Oh, do I have to?
It was almost as thought Andoni Iraola was playing bingo with himself as he sat down in front of the club media to give his first words after being announced as the new head coach of Liverpool football club. It was as on-the-nose expected as a 16-year-old learning Wonderwall on guitar: “it’s a special club,” he said, “Liverpool are massive.”
Get the media done and get outside and onto the pitch. That must be his only aim. “You don’t need a lot of things to get attracted by Liverpool,” he added before reminding us all that “Liverpool is Liverpool.” Can we go play outside now?
Iraola feels really anxious to get this over with and get outside. Sorry, not anxious: “really excited, really excited.”
“I always thought it’s a special club”
“You know that Liverpool’s a big club, one of the biggest in the world. But feeling inside and understanding a little bit more of this club, I always thought it’s a special club.”
Andoni Iraola comes into Liverpool as one of Europe’s top prospects. Having taken Rayo Vallecano to new heights in LaLiga, he did the same for Bournemouth, a team that have spent most of their history in the lower divisions, in the Premier League.
“But obviously the atmosphere, the supporters, the club, the players, the chance for me to coach top-level players, the chance to fight for titles. I think it cannot be more attractive than this. It’s difficult to find it. I’m really excited to start.”
Right, you can go now, Andoni. You’ve said hello to granny on the phone, and eaten all your vegetables. Go and play outside.
