Lamine Yamal will undergo medical tests this afternoon (Monday 9 October) at Spain’s National Team Headquarters, Las Rozas, where they will decide if he is fit to play for the side or if he should return to FC Barcelona to complete a recovery process.

The young winger suffered a hip flexor injury in Barcelona’s recent draw against Granada and as such he is a doubt for Spain’s upcoming games against Scotland and Norway. However, even if he is not fit to play against Scotland, boss Luis de la Fuente would like Lamine Yamal to be available for the second tie against Norway.

Barcelona release statement on Lamine Yamal

“Tests carried out have shown that first team player Lamine Yamal has a left hip flexor injury. He is out and his recovery will determine his availability. He will join the Spain national team and will also be evaluated by RFEF medical staff”, said a statement released by FC Barcelona.

Who will replace Lamine Yamal if he is injured?

However, the wait is still on to see what the results of the medical examination are, which are what will ultimately decide if he stays in Madrid or returns to Barcelona. De la Fuente has already prepared measures in case the player is sent home, calling up Ansu Fati and Bryan Zaragoza, who have come in to occupy the already free place given up by the injured Yeremy Pino, as well as the possible hole left by the Barça forward, were he not to pass the medical examinations.

The National Team are set to meet on Monday 9 October at the Las Rozas HQ, and the situation is critical: the games against Scotland and Norway are must-win for La Roja as they are currently second in the group. Scotland lead the way with 15 points after 5 games, Spain are behind them with 9 points and a game in hand. In third sit Erling Haaland’s Norway team, with 7 points.

La Roja’s turn for revenge after Scotland shock win

Spain lost dramatically to Scotland in the previous game in Glasgow, which is where the strong desire - and necessity - to win against them comes from. Norway have the same thought in mind and will try to use their home advantage against La Roja when the two face off in Norway.

In the previous fixture, held in Málaga, Spain were victorious. There was no Haaland then, but he’s back now, and given his hit-and-miss form in the Premier League, he will be out on the pitch with a huge point to prove. The striker has not scored for three games and didn’t find the back of the net in Manchester City’s loss to Arsenal in the Premier League. As such, doubts have crept in over the form of the forward, but he should not be forgotten about when it’s time for Spain to take on the Norwegian machine.
