Update:

A surprise appearance from NBA legend Michael Jordan became one of the most talked-about moments of Pep Guardiola’s farewell event at Manchester City, after the Chicago Bulls icon delivered a message that immediately sparked confusion among fans.

Guardiola, who is stepping down from his role after a highly decorated spell in charge of the Premier League club, was honored during a ceremony featuring former players and highlights from a decade of success. But it was a recorded message from Jordan that briefly shifted attention away from the celebration itself.

A surprise message from Michael Jordan

During the event, guests were shown video messages from several of Guardiola’s acquaintances and sporting figures. One of them came from Jordan, who offered congratulations on Guardiola’s career and praised his achievements.

“Hey Pep, this is Michael Jordan. I just want to congratulate you on an unbelievable career,” Jordan said in the recorded message.

So far, the tone matched the tribute expected for a high-profile farewell. But it was Jordan’s next line that caused confusion among viewers.

“Enjoy your retirement,” he added.

Guardiola is not officially retiring

The wording created confusion because Guardiola is not retiring from football or management. Instead, he has confirmed he will take a break from coaching after leaving Manchester City, saying he will be “out for a while” and will “not train for a while” following a demanding period at the top of the game.

Guardiola described the decision as the result of accumulated fatigue after nearly two decades of continuous management at elite level, stating he needs time to rest and recover after what he called the most intense period of his career.

Far from stepping away permanently, Guardiola has left the door open to a return in the future, making clear that his absence from coaching is a pause rather than an end point.

However, in elite sports, the term is often used loosely to describe stepping away from a role, even when the individual intends to return later. That appears to be the case here. Jordan, widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes in history, has rarely appeared in football-related contexts, making the message itself notable even before the wording became a talking point.

Guardiola leaves Manchester City after one of the most successful managerial spells in modern football. During his time at the club, he won 17 major trophies, including multiple Premier League titles and the club’s first UEFA Champions League triumph.

The club also confirmed plans to honor him permanently by renaming the Etihad Stadium’s North Stand as the “Pep Guardiola Stand”, with a statue to follow.
