Javier Aguirre’s possible starting XI begins to take shape ahead of the World Cup
‘Vasco’ Aguirre is expected to make some surprises, but in general will retain the vast majority of players from previous call-ups.

With just over a couple of months left before the World Cup kicks off across Mexico, the United States, and Canada, Javier Aguirre still hasn’t locked in his starting lineup for the June 11 opener against South Africa. But Mexico’s friendly against Portugal may offer the clearest glimpse yet of what “El Vasco” has in mind.
For the match at the newly renovated Estadio Ciudad de México, Aguirre has been forced to adjust due to several recent injuries. Even so, his plan for the March 28 fixture appears to have leaked on social media.
According to TUDN reporter Gibrán Araige, Aguirre intends to stay consistent in goal, keeping Raúl Rangel as the starter. That means Memo Ochoa and Carlos Acevedo would remain on the bench, especially with Luis Malagón ruled out of the World Cup due to injury.

Defense: A back four with a European reinforcement
Mexico would line up with a traditional back four:
- Jesús Gallardo
- Johan Vásquez
- César Montes
- Jorge Sánchez
The key detail: Jorge Sánchez would start at right back, strengthening that side of the field and bringing European experience into the lineup.
Midfield: Lira holding, Charly creating, and Fidalgo debuting
In midfield, Aguirre’s plan reportedly includes:
- Erik Lira as the holding midfielder
- Carlos Rodríguez in a more advanced, creative role
- Álvaro Fidalgo making his debut on the left side
The Spanish‑born, naturalized Mexican midfielder would be one of the main players Aguirre wants to test during this FIFA window.
Attack: Jiménez leading the line with Alvarado and Quiñones on the wings
Up front, Mexico would go with its strongest available trio:
- Raúl Alonso Jiménez as the central striker
- Roberto Alvarado on the left wing
- Julián Quiñones on the right
Aguirre plans to field his best attacking options against Portugal, using the friendly as a high‑level rehearsal before the World Cup.
Here is Mexico’s probable starting lineup against Portugal:
Goalkeeper: Raúl Rangel
Defenders: Jesús Gallardo, Johan Vásquez, César Montes and Jorge Sánchez
Midfield: Erik Lira, Carlos Rodríguez and Álvaro Fidalgo
Forwards: Raúl Jiménez, Roberto Alvarado and Julián Quiñones
