June 2023 FIFA World Rankings revealed: Spain, United States, Mexico, England, Argentina, Brazil...
The latest FIFA rankings have been published with some surprising movements thanks to the World Cup and recent international break.
The most recent FIFA World Rankings have been released, with an update list of the definitive best national teams on the planet, with no discussion or debate to be had. The 2022 World Cup, as well as the recent competitive games across have influenced a list which has spun out some interesting surprises.
The current world champions, led by MLS’ Leo Messi, Argentina, are top of the pile, while their losing final opponents France are just behind in second place. There have been big moves for teams such as the US, Mexico, Germany and Scotland.
Who is in the top five?
The top of the tree is about how one would expect the ranking to be. As well as the two recent World Cup finalists we have Brazil who, despite their recent wobble, maintain their position on the podium. Recent nearly-men England are behind them in 4th, with the Golden Generation of Belgium making the top five.
After that, Europe continues to dominate the higher echelons of the ranking, with teams such as Croatia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Italy and Spain all fighting amongst each other to push their way up the table.
Which Concacaf team is highest in the FIFA rankings?
The recent rise of the USMNT has not gone unnoticed within FIFA, who have them as the highest ranked team out of all of those within Concacaf, at 11th place in the world. The nearest team from the North American continent is Mexico, in 14th, just ahead of Costa Rica (42nd) and Canada (45th). El Tri, despite their turbulent time under Diego Cocca, in which the fans ended up deserting the team, actually moved upwards in the table, overtaking 2014 World Champions, Germany.

If we dip down into the underdogs of world football, we find teams like Sri Lanka (207) and the US Virgin Islands (208), who sit just ahead of the Caribbean islands: the British Virgin Islands (209) and then Antigua (210). Lovely holiday destinations, but perhaps not World Cup finalists in 2026. And then, at the end of the list, we have San Marino (211), the fifth-smallest country in the world, surrounded on all sides by Italy, which has just a 61km land mass.
