Puebla goalkeeper Karla Morales made history on Saturday by becoming the first goalkeeper to score the Liga MX Femenil - the top tier of the Mexican Women’s football league. The historic event occurred at Cuauhtémoc stadium, where Juan Carlos Cacho’s side hosted Pumas Femenil in Week 5 of the tournament.

Aerial Chavarin put the Auriazules took the lead on 51 minutes but Puebla were given a lifeline in the final minute in final minutes of the game in controversial circumstances. On 88 minutes, an indirect free-kick was awarded on the edge of the box after Pumas goalkeeper Melany Villeda was deemed to be time-wasting.

Andrea González layed the ball off to Nelly Alemán, whose shot struck Anahí Gómez’s forearm in the Pumas box - referee Fernando Portillo pointed straight to the spot amid more protests from the visitors. Up stepped Karla Morales, whose spot-kick was perfectly placed, making it 1-1 on 90+1 minutes and history made.

It brought up Puebla’s second goal of the 2023 Apertura and their first point. The team is 16th in the table after five games.

Pumas meanwhile are ninth on seven points - six points behind joint leaders Tigres and Monterrey. Puebla will face Querétaro on Wednesday while Jonathan Lazcano’s team travel to the border to face Xolos.
