Kylian Mbappé has until midnight on Monday evening to trigger his option to extend his Paris Saint-Germain contract beyond the summer of 2024.

The deal signed in 2022 keeps him under contract for two years, with Mbappé holding the power to activate a third year if he desires.

If he fails to do so, as is widely expected, PSG will look to offload the Frenchman this summer. In addition to long-time admirers Real Madrid, Chelsea and Al-Hilal have also expressed an interest in the 24-year-old in recent days.

Regardless of his decision, Mbappé is due to receive a huge €60 million loyalty bonus if he is still a PSG player on Tuesday, 1 August.

Mbappé contract detail reignites transfer rumours

It was only last year that Mbappé looked to have ended speculation over his future, appearing to sign a three-year deal in the French capital. But while the ‘2025′ on the back of his shirt suggested a three-year deal, it is Mbappé who control whether the final year of the contract is activated.

Earlier this summer Mbappé informed the club that he would not be staying beyond the first two years of the contract. This sparked fresh discussion surrounding his future and PSG are now looking to sell this summer to avoid one of the world’s most valuable players leaving on a free transfer in 2024.

However the French champions believe that Mbappé already has a deal in principle to sign for Real Madrid on a free transfer next summer. From January 2024, the final six months of his PSG contract, Mbappé will be free to formally negotiate with other non-French teams and sign pre-contract agreements.

Moving to Madrid at the expiration of his PSG contract could mean a hefty proportion of the transfer fee could instead go to Mbappé as a signing bonus.

Chelsea consider massive Mbappé transfer bid

PSG are desperate to avoid losing Mbappé, perhaps the finest player of his generation, on a free transfer next summer. Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi confirmed recently: “We don’t want to lose the best player in the world for free, we can’t do that.”

Al-Hilal had a world record bid accepted by PSG, but Mbappé refused to entertain a move to the Saudi Pro League. Liverpool have reportedly initiated talks on a one-year loan deal.

But the latest club to enter the race for the Frenchman is Chelsea, who are considering a huge cash-plus-players deal for Mbappe. The Mirror reports that Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has already taken part in discussions with Al-Khelaifi about a potential move.

Whatever happens, Mbappé will wake up on Tuesday morning as a PSG player and will have triggered the €60 million loyalty bonus from the Parisian club. From that point on, the Frenchman’s future is far less certain.
