Update:

Kylian Mbappé is now France’s all-time record scorer after a match-winning performance in their World Cup opener against Senegal. Mbappé scored twice in a 3-1 win for France, who showed their attacking power in a devastating second-half showing.

Mbappé’s brace takes him to 58 international goals in 99 games, an incredible tally at the age of 27. The Real Madrid forward was a part of the team that won the World Cup in 2018 and reached the final again in 2022, becoming only the second men’s player to score a World Cup final hat-trick.

The France captain moves ahead of Oliver Giroud (57 goals) in France’s all-time scoring list. The top five is rounded out by Thierry Henry (51), Antoine Griezmann (44) and Michel Platini (41).

Mbappé surpasses Messi and Pelé on World Cup all-time scoring list

Mbappé made history with France in the opening game of the 2026 World Cup but there are still more records within his sights this summer. Now making his third appearance at the tournament, Mbappé could well surpass the all-time World Cup scoring record, unless a former teammate gets there first.

The two-goal performance against Senegal puts Mbappé on 14 goals across all World Cup appearances. Only Miroslav Klose (16), Ronaldo Nazario (15) and Gerd Muller (14) can match Mbappé’s World Cup scoring record. But Mbappé is not the only one vying for a place in the history books this summer.

Former Paris Saint-Germain teammate Lionel Messi is on 13 goals from his five previous tournament appearances. The Argentina captain went into the 2026 World Cup one goal ahead of Mbappé and will also be targeting Klose’s record this summer. Mbappé’s France played before Argentina’s first game of the 2026 World Cup, giving him the chance to move clear of Messi and Brazilian legend Pelé (12).
