Lewandowski could headline Barcelona exodus as summer overhaul takes shape

Barring a collapse in LaLiga, Barcelona’s season already has a clear shape. Out of Europe, Hansi Flick’s side is on track to secure a second straight domestic title. But if recent evidence is any guide, tweaks are needed to compete with Europe’s elite. That responsibility now falls to sporting director Deco.

Over the past two years, Deco has maximized limited resources. Signings like Dani Olmo and Joan García have strengthened the squad, while more debated additions, including Wojciech Szczesny last season and João Cancelo this year, have also played a role.

Financial hurdles still in place

Before making any major moves, Deco must wait for Barcelona to return to LaLiga’s 1:1 spending rule, which allows clubs to reinvest every dollar they generate. As things stand, that threshold has not yet been met.

Recent reports suggest Barça still needs to make up €12 million (roughly $14.1 million) to regain full financial flexibility under league regulations.

Striker tops Barcelona’s priority list

If Barcelona does clear that hurdle, two priorities stand out. The first, acknowledged internally since January, is strengthening the attack.

Ferran Torres, under contract through 2027, has made a strong case for an extension. The Spain international has proven his value beyond goal-scoring streaks, showing a sharp understanding of the game and strong chemistry with younger stars like Lamine Yamal, Gavi, Pedri, and Fermín López.

Robert Lewandowski’s future, however, is far less certain. Now 37, the Polish striker’s next step will be decided soon. Club president Joan Laporta has said he would welcome his return, but his performances are no longer at their peak. While he has been a major contributor, Deco is not fully convinced extending his stay is the right move.

Complicating matters is a thin market for traditional No. 9s. That reality has pushed Barcelona to look beyond pure center forwards, targeting versatile attackers capable of operating across the front line, much like Torres.

Center back debate intensifies

The other major discussion surrounds central defense. Analysts like Thierry Henry have openly called for Barcelona to sign a physically dominant center back, one capable of handling top European opposition and stabilizing Flick’s high defensive line.

Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni has emerged as a popular name, though not everyone within the club is fully convinced. If funds become available, Deco will need to make a precise call.

That urgency has only grown after the departure of Iñigo Martínez, a key leader in defense. Still, there have been internal positives, including the emergence of Gerard Martín as a useful depth option.

Uncertainty also surrounds Andreas Christensen, who has spent most of the season sidelined with injury and is approaching the end of his contract.

Key decisions on loans and fringe players

Deco is also expected to meet with Flick to discuss João Cancelo and Marcus Rashford.

Barcelona has considered triggering a €30 million ($35.3 million) buy option for Rashford, though that decision may be revisited. The initial plan is to keep the England international if he fits within financial limits.

Cancelo, meanwhile, recently hinted he knows where he wants to play next season, suggesting he is open to staying. Currently on loan from Al Hilal, his situation could intersect with Marc Casadó, who has been weighing a potential move to Saudi Arabia.

Roony Bardghji presents another case. Limited opportunities, largely due to Lamine Yamal’s rise, have left the Swedish winger at a crossroads. If he pushes for more playing time, Barcelona would be open to a transfer. Otherwise, he could remain as depth.

Goalkeeper is a quieter issue but still unresolved. If Szczesny stays on, questions will follow about Marc-André ter Stegen’s long-term role behind Joan García.

Stability vs. big sales

These are the main outlines of Barcelona’s summer, unless the club opts for a major sale to help meet financial targets. Players like Jules Koundé, Alejandro Balde, or Frenkie de Jong could generate significant funds.

For now, that does not appear to be Deco’s preferred route. He continues to emphasize the importance of maintaining a strong core and a stable locker room.

The time for decisions is approaching.
