Update:
Liga MX introduces FAN ID requirement

Liga MX has announced that all adults will be required to verify their identity before entering stadiums from this month in an attempt to crack down on the type of violence seen last year.

Dozens were injured during fighting at Querétaro’s Estadio Corregidora in March 2022. Now, the Mexican league has introduced FAN ID cards for all adults wishing to attend a top flight game. On Monday it was announced through the league’s official channels that the change would be going into effect later this month.

A statement from the league reads: “As reported at the beginning of March, at the end of Matchday 13 of the Clausura 2023 Tournament, an evaluation of the conditions, stages and progress of the implementation of FAN ID in the 17 LIGA BBVA MX stadiums was carried out.

“Following the analysis, LIGA MX notified today the 18 Clubs that from 20 April 2023, with the start of Match Day 16 of the competition, it will be mandatory for all fans to present FAN ID at the entrance of each of the stadiums.”

Since the trial of the Fan ID began a total of 760,400 people have used FAN ID to gain access to Mexican stadiums.

“Anticipate your journey time in advance, arrive at the stadium with your FAN ID ready to present, arrive early on match days and save the QR previously obtained because it will be used for all the times you attend the stadium,” the statement advises.

“LIGA BBVA MX, the Clubs and Incode will work together to fine-tune the inspection operation at the stadium entrances and the assistance at the help points to help provide a swift entry for all fans.”

In March 2022 a violent riot broke out at a fixtures between Querétaro and Atlas in Liga MX which saw at least 26 people injured. In the aftermath of the shocking scenes Mexican authorities placed new emphasis on improving fan safety inside stadiums.
