WOMEN'S WORLD CUP 2023
Lionel Messi poses in Argentina Women’s away shirt in support of the side ahead of the World Cup
The men’s World Cup winner has shown his support for the women’s side ahead of the showpiece event in Australia and New Zealand.
With the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand just days away, excitement is at an all-time high for what many are saying will be the greatest edition of the tournament in women’s football history. And now the competition has the support of one of the most iconic faces not just in sport, but the whole world: Lionel Messi appears in Adidas’ new television advert for the World Cup and he features wearing the Argentina away shirt.
Added to this show of support, photos have also been released showing the 2022 men’s World Cup winner holding the official ball of the tournament that takes place ‘down under’ while also wearing the black garment that gets its inspiration from the Quebrada de Humahuaca mountain range in northern Argentina.
Will Argentina wear the kit in the World Cup?
The official photos show a serious-faced Leo Messi wearing the shirt that is not set to be worn by the men’s team, yet it will undoubtedly feature as part of the women’s team’s campaign, most likely when they face Italy in their opener on Monday 24 July in Auckland, as they will play as the ‘away’ team in the tie.
The full video, released by Adidas, is full of World Cup stars such as Australia’s Mary Fowler, England’s Alessia Russo, and Germany’s Lena Oberdorf, as well as David Beckham and actress, Jenna Ortega; the future Inter Miami player appears just for a few seconds in the shirt, playing the ball to Fowler.
The World Cup begins on July 20 when New Zealand take on Norway before Australia play against the Republic of Ireland.
