Liverpool vs Newcastle - another goal fest incoming for the Reds?

Liverpool had a sluggish start to the new season and made poor old Bournemouth pay for it by serving the Cherries a 9-0 pummeling at Anfield at the weekend - a result which sadly, cost Scott Parker his job. But Jürgen Klopp for one certainly isn’t expecting another “freak result” against Newcastle. The Magpies remain unbeaten after the first four games, revelling in a 2-0 win on the opening day then drawing their next three matches against Brighton, City and Wolves. They go into the game ahead of Liverpool in the table by just one point.

Under new ownership, Newcastle have money to spend and have spent the summer beefing up their squad - particularly at the back, which was a problem area for them last season. They have brought in England international goalkeeper Nick Pope, towering Dutch centre-back Sven Botman and signed left-back Matt Targett from Aston Villa. They have also reinforced their attack with Alexander Isak for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £60 million - a new club transfer record. Whether they will be able to get the relevant paperwork through to enable Isak to make his debut at Anfield is another matter. Eddie Howe could also be without Bruno Guimaraes, Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson - all three recovering from hamstring problems.

In his pre-match press briefing, Klopp happily told reporters that Liverpool’s casualty room is slowly starting to empty out with Curtis Jones and Joel Matip both now back training, Diogo Jota due to return later in the week and Thiago possibly back with the group sometime next week.

The Reds beat Newcastle home and away last season - coming from behind to win 3-1 at Anfield and scraping a 0-1 win at St James Park. In recent times this has proved a tricky fixture for the visitors. The Magpies have taken a point from Anfield on a handful of occasions during the past 20-odd years but have only managed to come away with a win once during the Premier League era - intriguingly, a side managed by former Kop idol Kevin Keegan and featuring ex-Reds Peter Beardsley and Barry Venison. Rob Lee and Andy Cole gave Keegan and the travelling Toon Army something to cheer on their way home after a 0-2 victory in April 1994.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-1
