‘Lost in translation’ moment as MLS mix-up new Atlanta United Japanese star
MLS side Atlanta United confirmed the acquisition of Japanese striker Cayman Togashi on a free transfer.
MLS staff were left red-faced this week after claiming that Atlanta United had scooped the signing of Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi when the ‘Five Stripes’ had actually acquired 31-year-old Cayman Togashi. The former Sagan Tosu striker joins the MLS side on a one-season deal as a free agent.
MLS posted an article on the website earlier this week claiming that it was in fact the 29-year-old Japanese international Furuhashi who had completed a transfer to the Georgia based club, who were previously linked with a move for the Celtic striker.
Earlier in the week Atlanta had been teasing fans that a new signing was imminent from the “land of the rising sun” with MLS then claiming that it was the Celtic player that had arrived at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium and not Togashi.
“Major League Soccer’s website mistakenly posted an article that named the wrong player as having signed with an MLS club,” MLS said in a statement to ESPN.
“The article was immediately removed and corrected. MLS extends its sincere apologies to the impacted parties.”
The Five Stripes kick-start their 2025 MLS campaign at home to Montreal and fans will be hoping to see the new Japanese star Togashi in action.
