Malagón breaks his silence after devastating injury leaves him out of Mexico’s World Cup squad
The América goalkeeper suffered a serious injury in Tuesday’s match - one which rules him out of this summer’s World Cup.

With the full extent of his Achilles tendon rupture still not officially confirmed, Luis Ángel Malagón has shared his first public message after suffering the injury during the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 against the Philadelphia Union.
The setback not only rules him out for the rest of the Clausura 2026 and a large portion of the Apertura 2026 — it also knocks him out of the World Cup, a crushing blow for a goalkeeper who, until recently, was considered Mexico’s undisputed starter.
Malagón’s message
In an Instagram Story, the 29‑year‑old goalkeeper wrote:
“There are moments in life that are hard to understand, especially when you’ve always tried to walk a straight line and act in good faith. Today, with all the pain in my heart, I want to thank everyone — my teammates for their words and prayers, and especially my family for never abandoning me. I’m hurt and sad, with my soul shattered. Trying to understand the situation and asking myself, ‘Why?’
That dream seems to be slipping away, but I know God will give me the answer someday. God bless everyone — and especially those who take joy in situations like this. With love and gratitude, Luis Ángel Malagón Velázquez.”
What’s next for América?
Inside Club América, all signs point to Rodolfo Cota taking over as the starting goalkeeper, with Fernando Tapia firmly in the mix as well. With André Jardine already hinting at rotations, the 24‑year‑old Tapia is expected to start this weekend against Mazatlán, while Cota would return for the second leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup.
And for Mexico?
Malagón’s absence reshapes the depth chart for El Tri. Jesús “Tala” Rangel now emerges as the strongest candidate to claim the No. 1 spot. Behind him, questions remain. Carlos Acevedo has been Javier Aguirre’s regular third goalkeeper in recent call‑ups, but Guillermo Ochoa’s name is gaining momentum once again.
Malagón’s injury leaves Mexico without the goalkeeper who had been groomed to lead the team into the World Cup — and forces both América and El Tri to rethink their plans at the most crucial moment.
